Radar Detector (Illinois)
Radar Detector (Illinois)
Does anyone know if Radar Detectors are legal or illegal here in Illinois? I want to put one into my truck, but not enough that it alone would be enough reason for a police officer to pull me over.
They aren't illegal where I live, but I got one of those Passport SRX systems and had it custom installed. It is very incognito and not a target for thieves that see something stuck to your windshield. The only downfall is that you can't take it out and put it in any other vehicle you might be driving that day.
This has nothing to do with the question at hand but I don't get why people install radar detectors? They are absolutely worthless unless the police officer leaves his radar "on". If I were an officer
, I would sit with my unit on "Standby" then click the remote to activate when I see the target. A radar detector won't activate until that time... and it is too late.... A good officer can judge solely by sight within 2-3 mph a vehicle's speed, so he does not have to "activate" the radar unit until he sees a good target, thus remaining stealth to subjects with radar detectors coming down the road... Obviously my opinion but save your money.

And becuase an officer can judge ur speed anyway he has to get a reading or it wont hold in court.
But yea, i agree that radar detectors are more of a feel safe than a be safe, that being said i always want one and i will get one of the best (passport 8500 most likely). Because most time's they hide and you dont see them but a radar detector will.

Whoa!!!
I have worked at the same place for 23+ years running pretty much the same stretch of highway. I have move several times so the actiual mileage has varied. With that said, I have been driving the farthest strecth the past 6 years. Now granted, with the experience I have had from driving essentially to the same place, I DO know where the radar spots are.
I have got 1 speeding ticket in all those drives.
I have been lasered I don't know how many times and with the help of my radar detctor been able to back it down in time. For a laser to hold up they have to "hit" you twice. This is in order to verify the speed. If you have a decent radar detctor you will notice you will get two shots from the laser. The second one is the one that will get you the ticket. You have to be paying attention, and slow it down when you get the signal.
I know this is not a ringing endorsement for a detctor but they do work if you are paying attention.
Sorry for the long response and I know my truck picture is too big.
Just trying to help.

Where did you hear this at? Just curious because I use to work in KY and TN and have written many speeding tickets using radar and Lidar and have never heard of this.. Well that was over 4 years ago, but I don't think it changed.

First, I won't even bother to activate the radar unit unless I know you are speeding. Therefore, it doesnt matter if the "guy 100 meters down the road" gets a hit on his radar detector because I just locked you in and you're hit. I may sit for 10 or 20 minutes before I even activate it and no radar detector will now I am there until I do.
Second, an officer DOES NOT need a reading on his unit to get a conviction in court ( in NJ anyway ). This has been upheld numerous times. An officer can testify SOLEY on OBSERVATION in regards to a speeding vehicle and get a 100% conviction. Now, a new guy is gonna have a tough time, but anyone with a few years on has got it.
And I'm spent........

Please host your truck photos here at f150online.com as they are AUTOMATICALLY SIZED for the forums. It's a HUGE distraction to have ENORMOUS photos posted in threads and hampers the experience that some dialup members are able to have while on the site. In short, we'll remove them when they're out of control large...
Also, being that this is a Illinois based issue and not 04+ based, it's off to the MIDWEST REGIONAL forum....

In other states though the officer must have 'verifiable' proof of the infraction. Where I live the officers are 'stupid' and leave their radar and lidar active most of the time and when you get w/in a 1/4 mile or so the detector goes off and you just tap the brakes and go on by, while the poor sucker w/o a detector in another lane gets screwed.
(According to Passport Escort, Radar detectors are leagl in all 50 states, as long as they are not being used in a commercial vehicle)-Direct from the owners manual
