Hello everyone just wondering if anyone knows how to manually open the blackwood tonneau. I think it should be easy to close manually just opening it is a problem. I hope its just the fuse.

There is a release switch under the front side of the bed (driver side I believe) that will allow you to open the tonneau manually.
Do you have the manual? The directions are in there. I know because I had to use it about this time last year.

TKS rdy, after I posted this i went to the manual ( should have done it first ) but was in a panic to get stuff out from the bed of blackwood. Do you know what fuses control the tonneau, and since you had the same problem was it your fuse or module that gave problems?
tks again rdy

I was in a similar situation when mine went out. I was loading it with items to take to an auction to benefit the American Cancer Society that I was chairing. Talk about a stressful few minutes. Once I found out how to open it (& tested that I culd) I was gone to the banquet facility.
I ended up taking it in to the dealership & they replaced the module. I haven't had a problem since then.
There is a thread in this section where we discussed the tonneau & their workings.

just wondering when i manual open it everytime i have no problem closing it automatically with the key fob or overhead console, does this seem like a problem with the module or fuse that controls opening it.
you didn't by chance turn off the tonneau in the center console(key switch)? it would allow you to close it with the inside switches but not open. but your remote would still open and shut it. its a valet parking safety feature, if you got the 3rd key(grey in color) which is suppose to be for valet parking its slightly thicker and wont fit into the keyed switch in the center console.

I just ordered the module today, should take 7 days to come and prolly take 2 days for me to install, but about the center console, wouldn't you need the valet key to switch it off - which i dont have anyway.
just wondering where is the valet key switch in center console by the stereo, navigation, climate control ??
tks for your time

The keyed switch for the tonneau cover is in the front center console, by the CD changer.
You can easily tell when the module for the tonneau cover is fried - the neon lights in the bed won't work at all, or they'll flicker and/or be very dim.

I changed my tonneau cover 2 years ago or so. It is a major pain in the a$$ to replace. You have to take a lot of panels off, and those stainless steel panels are razor sharp. I cut my hands up pretty good. But you pretty much can't completely take the back stainless steel panel off and have to pry it up and try to reach your hands under it. I had the detailed instructions from some service manual or some online manual. But even they were not as good as they should have been. I had to do some guessing here and there.
By the way, I doesn't say anywhere on here that you figured out how to open the tonneau manually. You have to lay on your back under the RH side of the box. Then the is a cover near the frame rail I think that you have to insert your key into. Once it opens you pull a lever and the tonneau opens manually.

TKs to everyone that replied thus far, i've learn't alot already, I am still waiting for the module to arrive, since i'm in Canada it will take about 1 wk. Yeah I agree I looked at the procedure and from doing research most peeps say its a pain in the ***, i wil see what the lincoln dealership will charge and then make a decision. I'll keep everyone updated after the part arrives and once installed. Once agian tks to everyone.
This problem keeps getting wierder, I am scheduled for tuesday to get the part put in. Anyway i get back from a family outing and shut off the truck and it opens by itself, infact everytime i shut the truck off, the tonneau opens by itself, even without pressing any tonneau bottons, turn off the truck and tonneau opens. It also opens and closes properly with the remote and overhead console, unlike before. Since i have been opening it manually i wonder if that did anything to it, plus it rained all day yesterday.
This will probably count for nothing, but I had a similar problem with ice forming between the bed and the cover when I owned my Blackwood.
It may be that water from the rain you mentioned may be interfering with the proper operation of the cover. In my case, I completely cleaned all moisture off of both the bed rails and the underside of the cover and it worked fine.
I also had a "failure" of the control module, but to this day I wonder if it was the problem I describe above rather than a module failure.
As a side note, I had a problem with the replacement vehicle, an 05 Navigator, where the sunroof would not function properly. Turned out to be not a mechanical failure but, again, a problem of moisture interfering with the electronic mechanisms and causing the sunroof to not open or close.
Just some thoughts.

Blackwood tonneau cover
Well, mine stopped working last night. It does nothing. I think it's getting power because the interiour light comes on when I click the clicker. But, there's no noise or anything from the cover. Where should I start? I had to lay down on the floor of my garage to locate that stupid lock/lever to open it. Boy, why in the world did Ford put that in such a cappy place? Of course it was raining and I was thinking that maybe something got wet while I was loading grocies. But, there again, I've loaded it many times in the rain before without any problems. I think I'm going to try and repair it myself so, any pointers will be appreciated. The motor was repaired or replaced about two years ago under warranty. But, now I'm on my own.
