Trade the Blackwood? Not until I'm 6 feet under...

No offense intended to anyone, but here is my 2c on the 2006 LT.

The LT looks VERY similar to my 2004 F150 Fx4. It will turn heads due to the grill and tail lights, but that's really about it! They should have at least included optional equipment such as a retractable running board, navigation system, etc.

There is nothing compelling about it that will make me want to trade in my Fx4 <OR> my Blackwood. I did not lease or finance the 'Wood - I paid cash straight up once they dropped the price by $7,500+. I paid much less for the Fx4, and bought it to use as a "work" truck. Not that I really do much with it, but it's stuff that I'd hesitate to do with an LT (wouldn't want to scratch the LT, etc.).

The LT sticker may be less than the Blackwood, but you'll end up spending just as much on an LT as I did for my Blackwood (if not more) to equip it similarly, end even then you'll just have a rebranded F150 with a bunch of aftermarket equipment. You won't have a unique looking vehicle at all (aka Edsel), other than by the parts that you add to it.

I still have people stop me to ask about the Blackwood, since most people have never seen one. They assume that it's new (it does still looks and smell new). Other people give the "thumbs up" And most just check it out like it was a gorgeous lady in some tight fitting clothes (with heels). I think of her as my high maintenance girlfriend, since I feel the need to keep her looking show-ready when in public.

Sorry - just dusted the 'Wood off the other day and drove it to work and my head is still swelling from all of the adulations. Yes, it still defines me.

Amen brother.... I finally saw a Mark LT at the Ft. Lauderdale auto show today. While it is a beautiful truck, it still looks too much like an F150. Comments overheard from others at the show were similar. I did like the seats though, but the rest of the interior was a disappointment. When the sales guy heard that I had a 'Wood, he was all over me to get in and test drive a Mark. The Ford display was next to Lincoln and there was a King Ranch there that seemed every bit the luxury ride that the LT was.Nicer colors too. The more that I drive the 'Wood ,the happier I am with it (excluding the gas mileage, but I knew what I was getting). It is twice the truck for half the money,IMHO.

Trip 7's,
A while back you posted a pic of your Blackwood with a billet grill. Do you know who made it? I've been looking for one and I really liked yours.
Thanks, Rich

Thumbs up

I agree
we looked at the new lt saturday, My wife said it looked like f150-good girl- the lt was nice and i think they will sell well, but it is not unique enough fo me,
The salesman was full of s**t. first he said they were the only dealer with one in the state(i had seen them on 2 other dealer lots but had not stopped) then he starts talking trash about the blackwood ( we were driving our expedition) then he tells us that they are only going to make 5000 lt's.
this guy will be selling hondas or toasters next week.

I agree with both of you guys. I drive my blackwood everyday to work and it doesn't matter where I am someone makes a comment on it. Nobody seems to know Lincoln made a truck or theythink its the new Lt that they just heard about. I just worked on a new 05 Nav for a guy and showed him my blackwood and said for an 02 it was cleaner than his new one . Thx but I'll keep my Wood.

As the newest owner of a "Wood" on this forum, I have to agree. The 'Wood is (look-wise) to a F150 like a Focus is to a Lincon LS. The new Mark lt is a good looking truck, but it is not far enough removed from its Ford bretheren IMHO. Thats not to say that the F150 is not a great looking truck, BUT for standout looks alone, the 'Wood stands alone.

And let me take this time to say thanks to all the replies during my search for my Blackwood. Great site and I suppose this one has more BW owners than any other

I make this assumption as well. Anytime I find another Wood owner somewhere else on the web I always do what I can to get them over here. There aren't many of us so it benefits all of us if we can congregate in the same place to share knowledge & ideas.

BTW, my Wood ain't going nowhere. July the lease is up & I plan to try & get them to come down a bit on the buy-out amount since I leased mine a few weeks before they announced the cancelation.

For what its worth there is a Wood on the used lot across from my work & 2 LTs (black & burgandy, I think) around the corner from us. Still not really impressed by the LTS. Maybe I'll take the company's Kia over there & play with the salespeople a little.

Question: does the LT have the same grill as the Wood? It looks bigger (maybe) & shinier but that could be since my Wood if filthy from this frickin weather.

A little bit of counterpoint here, if I may.

Wow, almost my shortest post ever, hit the submit button by mistake after the first sentence.

The LT is what it is and that ain't all bad in my opinion unless you happen to drive a Blackwood. And.... the Blackwood ain't all that good in many respects, also my opinion, after 34 months of driving one.

I have come to the conclusion that the LT is to Lincoln what the Escalade is to Cadillac and we all know what a hit that vehicle has been for GM. The inclusion of 4 wheel drive and several colors to the specification I believe will give the LT an appeal many times greater than that of the Blackwood.

The LT is also a practical truck, which the Blackwood is not, my biggest gripe about the vehicle. Well, it is also Black and I have given up almost trying to keep it looking smart 100% of the time.
The first two years, I ran it through the local hand wash place so many times I was racking up more free washes than I could handle and then figured out how much those free washes were costing me.

Anyway, I guess my gut feeling is that we here on this board are enthusiasts by definition and know all there is worth knowing about Blackwoods and LTs. The target audience probably knows bugger all about the fact that a Blackwood and an LT are merely derivatives of an ordinary F150 work truck. If it says Lincoln on the hood and if it has 4 wheel drive and you can get it in a number of colors, I think they will buy it. In much the same way that Escalade buyers probably did not know the vehicles was based on a Chevy truck. It said it was a Cadillac, therefore it is a Cadillac and they purchased tons of them and still do. I think Lincoln will do quite well with the LT.

Having said all that negative stuff, I have thoroughly enjoyed my Blackwood absenting the limitations mentioned above. It was more of an eye candy vehicle than many I have driven including my Lightning. Still, when the lease is up in May, it goes back to the dealer.

It's replacement..........I turned 65 on the 18th. I just had my 1992 Town Car returned to stock by one of CaptJJs technician buddies and had the air suspension in the rear fixed, did the front brakes and put on 4 new tires and had the front end gone through. It is now pretty much 100% mechanically and being a 50K mile California car the body and interior are near perfect. I will use that car as my daily driver and when we go on trips, we will use Pat's 05 Navigator Ultra or whatever it is called. The damned thing is as big as a Mack truck and gets about the same mileage but it rides and drives just as nice as the Town Car and has more gadgets than I can keep up with. I fit the demographic target group to a T for both vehicles and am learning to enjoy driving two traditional American Luxury Vehicles.

Gettin' old ain't all that bad.

Bill

About gettin' old

You know what they say about " just because there is snow on the roof......( or in my case, the fire down below is powered by the highly polished cranial solar dome) LOL.

Bill, you're right when you say that the LT has a lot of merit. After seeing one, I agree that it is a beautiful truck. I just question whether practicality is even an issue for someone interested in this type of vehicle. I think that its all about the "look" and I don't see it in the LT. If you are comparing the LT to an Escalade, IMHO the Caddy wins hands down for luxury and the "bling" factor. There are just too many nice trucks out there that have the practical aspects as well as the luxury areas covered (King Ranch, Dodge SRT, Avalanche, etc) and at a better price point. The LT that I looked at was $45,000 (2WD) and as far as I could see, wasn't loaded. (Dealer didn't even have a brochure available that listed all available options and this was at AN AUTO SHOW!!) You are right though, they will probably sell more of them than Blackwoods.

Happy Birthday...When's the party???

Evening Straps:

I liked the analogy about the solar dome, I fit that description too.

In the end, we are both right, I would guess.

Perhaps, though, I should stress the point that I think Lincoln did a better job this time at targeting their potential customer base.
The inclusion of 4 wheel drive is marketing driven, not practicality driven as we both know. 90% of the people who insist on 4 wheel drive or AWD are not good enough drivers to take advantage of that feature anyway, regardless of the make of the vehicle. The neighbor has it so they want it. I think color choices will help too. Many people just do not want black, especially in retirement areas such as CA, FL and AZ.

I think also that we have to take into consideration the cachet of the Lincoln name. The other vehicles you mentioned are great products but most likely would not come up on the "shopping list" of someone who is already a potential or present Lincoln owner. As an example, for all that I know and read, Kia and Hyundai make really good cars, possibly the best value for money cars on the road right now. Still, I would not consider buying one because it does not fit my image of what I want to be seen driving. Even being an enthusiast, even knowing that a Blackwood or an LT are rebadged/upgraded work trucks, even knowing (I was in the business for 30+ years) that they are horribly overpriced for what they are, I drive Lincolns. And, of course, that includes our Navigator, which is an Ultimate, not an Ultra, that stickered for a ridiculous $57K which is a rebadged Expy.

Bottom line to me, and this is only a very personal opinion, most folks who buy/lease anything above a subcompact are making some sort of statement, as much of a statement as their bank account will let them.

It will be interesting to see if my theory is correct and we will see whether Lincoln can hit a minor home run with the LT. I certainly hope so as right now FMC and Lincoln in particular need all the home runs they can get, minor or major.

The 4-wheel drive is the only thing I really wanted on the Wood & was disappointed it didn't have (an initial factor, other that the sticker, that kept me out of one). I may not need 4x4 often but a couple times a year Michigan gets a good dumping of snow onto our crappy roads. In a couple weeks I won't even have the option of stealing the excursion for those days so it will be the Wood at a very slow pace or stay at home (I'm sure the curior would be pissed if she had to deliver my work on those days ).
