Performance air filter
Performance air filter
Posted this on the Navigator forum but no response yet.
I want to install a conical/open style filter on my Wood and thought I had what I wanted from AirRaid. Called them to order same and they discontinued the Navigator/Blackwood number.
Suggested Volant who have a "universal" model that fits a wide range of 4.6/5.4 litre FMC motors. That seems a little strange to me as I thought each vehicle had a unique intake setup.
Anyone here have any input or a better source?

Your model lists the same K&N filter that my Mustang GT and F150 uses.
Part# E0945 @ Autozone
I know you want an open filter but I just bring this to your attention to let you know that the filter housings are pretty much the same so how much different can the intake plenums be from say an F150. Can you post a picture of your stock system?

Bill one of my customers with an 02 Navi installed the Volant kit on his, happy with it thus far. Only other alternative I could find was a K&N FIPK.
BTW check ebay, someone had an airraid kit for a Navi for a good price!

JLP ram air
The weather was gorgeous today so we finally were able to go outside (w/out a jacket no less).
Robert got it installed w/very little modification. He'll post more details & pics later as he is out testing it. We haven't put the chip in yet (since I told him I wanted to watch, in case I have to remove it on my own).

cost: JLP ram-air $285 as shown
time: I think it took Robert about 2-3 hours, but this included the time where we argued about exactly how we could make the connection
difficulty: we only modified the boot slightly to fit the connector inside of it (slit the side, notched out a hole for the sensor to pug in, then sealed up the slit)
sound: I'll let you know tonight after some freeway time w/the windows down
availability: it is the regular JLP ram-air, so if he has them (he usually does) then you can get one
Keep in mind that you'll have to do the boot modification yourself, but it wasn't nearly as bad this was as some of the other ideas we threw around.

well i did have to use a donut of sorts to enlarge the diamter of the mass air meter. overall it wasn't to hard to do most of the time was spend chasing veronica and decideing how i would accomplish this. i think it would look better to cut off the excess boot thats bunched up around the meters plug but for now its staying the way it is. atleast til katy lets me have her input.
Hmmmm!
Katy/Rob:
You may or may not relate to this, but I turn 63 tomorrow and my wrenching/modifying days ended about the time vehicles became totally computer controlled and I no longer understood how things worked and worried about screwing something up.
As such, I am rather reluctant to order one of those things and then have to cut/slice/whatever stuff to make it work. I just do not know mechanically what does what and I don't want to make a mess of it. I did install Sal's filter but that was a straightforward bolt in/on deal. I had my dyno guy install the chips I had and a muffler shop do the exhaust.
I am probably asking too much for a product that may have a market of maybe 50 units but it would be nice to get either instructions or parts to make it a bolt on deal.
To give you an idea of my incompetence and to make a small joke on myself, I changed the location of my printer today and in so doing pulled and pushed at all the wires going to the surge protector and the other peripherals. Thought I was careful, but.
When I rebooted, my monitor screen was pink. Tried the controls on the monitor, no go. Tried the tutorial then the functional tests indicated there. I had no green. Tried to link to Gateway/AOL/Anybody out There. No Go.
Finally got pissed off and tore the whole thing apart. Tower, Monitor, Printer, Fax Machine, Scanner and Sound System.
Plugged everything back together and it works fine. I have no bloody idea why and it bugs the heck out of me. Wasted almost an hour fiddling with it. Don't want to do that with the Wood.
Ideas???

bill i agree w/ you on the cutting slicing and hacking of things. i am trying to see if i can get another intake tube setup just incase katy wants to go back to stock or in case she has warranty work that needs to be done so their is no hassle so if i get another intake i could make a boltup deal for you (if you like the way we did it) and exchange for say your intake tube as a core or if you want another tube for the same reason let us know if this is something you had in mind or even just an open fiter the same way as this.
preliminary reports...
Preliminary reports on the JLP ram-air say..... HOT DA**!
The sound is awesome (did some good testing since traffic was way down on St. Patty's day), definite difference in take off & cruising speed seems a lot smoother at all levels (Robert said it used to bog when jumping on it at 60-85, I never tested this before). I've noticed I am getting amazing gas mileage (used to get around 12-13 mpg, yesterday I noticed it at 15.1) while driving as normal, actually a little harder than normal. We do need to look at the scoop hose some as it rubs the tire on hard rights but that's nothing a controlled turn can't cure.
Remember, these are just prelim reports. I'll let you know how it reacts once we put the chip in this weekend.

Hey Katy/Rob:
For now, I am going with an Air Force One filter setup
from Mike Troyer whom I just got off the phone with.
For my purposes, I think it will do what I need and is
a bolt on deal.
Should have it some time next week and wil let you know
how it went.
