I am considering getting a Giant Schnauzer and taping his ears. Seems like a lot of work??
I'm assuming he is tapped because Sal got his ears clipped.......almost all Dob's get their ears clipped. Is taping a different procedure Josh

i did the same thing with my last boxer, i figured it wasnt worth his pain and my a$$ having to keep taping his sore ears up.

speaking on subject, my cousins pitbull just had a litter, man are those beautiful dogs, the still have their eyes shut. registered pups, he should make a decent amount off of them

Schnauzer's ears get clipped too, I think. The purpose of the taping is so the ears stand up and don't fall over As young pups, I believe they put something on the ear along with tape to get it to stand up and then as they grow older, they just use tape. Just looks much better on Dobs and Schnzers, and most breeds, in my opinion. Just seems like it would require a lot of work...taping, untaping, taping, untaping, taping, untaping, cleaning, taping, untaping.......

Let's see what the Sal-man says.

Yea, we left our dogs ears floppy. Since they were already floppy and knew they wern't going to stand staight up, we thought it was the best choice.

The actual surgery is done between 7-10 weeks. The dogs suffer a little discomfort as the ear edge heals, which takes about 2 weeks. After that, there is no discomfort felt by the dog from the actual ear cropping. The posting will be an annoyance, but that's it. How long you have to post the dog depends on the type of cut. A standard house pet type cut, also known as a military cut, is short, and it does not take long for the cartilage to hold shape. On the other end, is the "show" cut, which is a very long cropped ear, and takes several months to take. That is what Duke has, as he was bred for show and working duty by the breeder, and why we are still posting him. If you are getting a purebred pup of any breed from a breeder, a GOOD breeder will not sell the pup until it's been cropped and healed. Ususally you get the pup with the ears taped, and then you have to keep up with it.

There are several different posting methods, the most common is using a tampon or rolled paper towel. That is the "post" and is used to wrap the ear and hold it in shape while the cartilage forms. Basically you take a paper towel, roll it and tape it. That becomes the post. Then you back tape the post so it's sticky side out, insert it into the ear, and massage the ear around it. Then you take the sports tape and tape the ear up so that everything stays in place. Some people also use Skin bond on the inside of the ear to glue the post in place.

It takes a lot of patience and you have to keep up with it, but it's worth it in the end.

I am pretty sure Schnauzer's normally have wirey hair. His dogs is soft instead.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Phillip,

I have seen soft coat, which is fluffy feeling, and hard coats, which are wirey feeling.

Sal,
How often do you re-tape and re-post? How long does it take? I agree it is worth it in the end.....especially on Dobes.

Every three days. Unpost, give it a few hours to breath, clean the ears, repost. Most people leave them off for a full day, but on Duke, one of his ears will fall if left that long. Posting takes about 10-15 minutes.

Sal,

Do you plan on showing Duke? Confirmation or work?

The pic I posted of my Rot is when he won Best of Breed. It can be a lot of fun at times. Very time consuming and costly though. I wanted to do Schutzund (spelling?) with him, but that was not his cup of tea.....
My other rot, she is a great pet!

Yea, she is a soft coat. In the winter, we keep her skirt long, but in summer, we cut it short. In that pic, she's just starting to grow her skirt again.

Josh, I would prefer to do Schutzlund with him, but honestly, I can't devote that kind of time to the training required for it. That's a full time job in itself. I am going to bring him to some of the trainings my breeder offers. I just want him to at least learn the basics of the three areas, just so he has the skills that will make him a better overall dog.
