Stock Oil pressure sender

Does anyone know the signal that the stock oil pressure sender sends?

Since I'm installing an oil pressure gauge, I just want to replace the stock sender with a resistor so the computer is happy, but I don't know the resistance required...

As far as I know, the oil pressure sending unit (switch) has no communication with your PCM. There is no resistance, it is just an ON/OFF switch connected to your guage. When the switch sees oil pressure it moves and supplies ground to your guage and you get a reading.

I'd suggest getting a T and using both senders, but if you don't want to do that you could just run that single wire to ground (strongly recommend putting a fuse in-line because you'd basically be creating a constant short to ground) and whenever your key is on, your dash guage will read oil pressure normal. or just leave it unplugged and your dash guage will read nothing.

The PCM will remain none the wiser.

good luck.

later,
chris

nope!

It's some resistance because it can actually detect an over pressure condition as well as a no pressure condition. Guess I get to crawl under a running truck.

no offense, but I still THINK you are incorrect. and even if you were correct, what does this have to do with the PCM?

read this from Ford shop manual:

Low Oil Pressure Indicator
The low oil pressure indicator on the instrument cluster receives the oil pressure status directly from the oil pressure switch. The two-position oil pressure gauge will display either normal or no oil pressure. The low oil pressure indicator will prove out when the ignition switch is placed in the START position and then in the RUN position.
the key words there are "two-position" as in ON and OFF, or Normal Oil Pressure and NO Oil Pressure.

From Ford EVTM:

The switch "Closes with normal oil pressure, causing a gauge reading of NORMAL. With low oil pressure, switch opens and causes a LOW gauge reading."

my theory...

Based on nothing more than something I read somewhere....

Short = over pressure
some magic value = happy days
open = low pressure

If the PCM gets the wrong value, it'll throw a SES light and we don't want that!

Coldie

PS: You definetly may be right. I honestly don't know where I read that it is resistive (and that the PCM actually has the pressure)

Yet another option would be to remove the stock sender/switch, add a tee and a switch from AutoMeter. You can then use that switch to wire to a big-*ss AutoMeter warning light. Or, to get really out of hand, two tees and all three.
