Race Fuel Prices
Race Fuel Prices
My local 76 race gas distributor wants $4.10 a gallon for the 100 octane unleaded, if I purchase a 55 gallon drum. Its $5.00 a gallon for 5 gallon can.
What brand and price is everyone else dealing with?
I haven't obtained any prices on VP Fuels or Trick Fuels yet.

Vinnie, there is a distributor in Clifton who has like 6 different grades. I forget the name of them but they are off of Main Ave. The place next door (Getty) also sells 100 out of a pump for like 4.25

I bought 10 gallons of VP C16 here locally for $6.50/gallon about two months ago.
Had my Syclone at Atco a couple weeks back, along w/ two 5gallon cans, and said 'fill the cans and put another 5 gallons in the truck'. $6/gallon X 15 gallons =
I'm thinking about getting a 33gallon drum of the C16 in the Spring though. Good Stuff!

Just out of curiousity...unless you actually have a chip burned that requires 100+ octane or you are having some serious detonation issues (which would probably be better cured with a different tune) why would you spend the money on race gas? My understanding is that the octane rating of gasoline tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. Obviously when gas ignites by compression rather than because of the spark from the spark plug, it causes knocking/detonation in the engine. We all know that detonation can damage an engine, so it is not something you want to have happening. Becasue of the 'nature of the beast' lower-octane gas (like "regular" 87-octane gasoline) can handle the least amount of compression before igniting. However, you may be able to compress 110 octane significantly more than 87 but because of that simple fact it will also require more energy to ignite that same 110 mixture. So, theory has it, that unless you have a good reason for needing 100+ octane it may actually slow you down over the minimum octane rating that your engine can get away with without detonating...not to mention making a serious dent in your wallet.
Ask some of the Hayabusa boys...most of them will tell you to avoid 93 octane and run 87 octane, which seems to run fine in an 11.0/1 motor that spins to 11K rpm. Dyno tests have even shown a tad more power on the 87 stuff...I've even seen some turbo bikes running on 93 octane pump gas with 18 lbs. of boost and putting out almost 400 hp.

insurance...
Also the fix factor. a lot of the "race" programs we run require 95 octane. Since pretty much no one here empties their gas tank, you have to mix with higher octane to get it up there.
Personally I use toluene and skip the whole "gas" thing
