Help new owner with boost problem, please!

Hi everyone. I just purchased a 2000 L and am having lots of fun with it. However, my problem is that yesterday I decided to check out the boost and noticed to my dismay that when you WOT the boost immediately jumps to about 6lbs then falls and stays right at 5lbs. I tried this in every gear with same results. The only mods to the truck are a superchips chip (just firm up ****s, and timing), boost bypass (unplugged harness), and a borla catback. Any help would be appreciated. Can't wait to start the modding, once the truck is fixed of course.

It's very strange to see a bolt create such little boost. How many miles? Stock air box? Dirty Filter? Been to a track or Dyno to see how it's performs?

1) Check the air filter.
2) Measure the lower pulley diameter
3) Measure the upper pulley diameter
4) Get an accurate gauge. Even a test gauge will work, plug in right under the steering column.

The trucks are great, the boost gauge is VERY inaccurate. Mine actually measures vacume while in a boost condition.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Stats: truck has 5900 miles on it. The air filter seems to be clean, I blew it out just to check. Stock airbox, not modified. Also, I have a Autometer boost gauge installed and it agrees with the stock gauge. I will check pullies tomorrow. thanks

If the pulley diameters are good, then replace the air filter even if it seems like it's clean. You should be looking at 8-9 lbs boost with stock everything. If it's still under 8 lbs, I would check the intercooler, and make sure that it's clean. But that's a last resort, because it's more work.

I think tomorrow I will simply pull the airfilter out of the airbox and do a quick run just to rule that out as a culprit. If all else fails I will do what detail stated and check my 'godamn boost actuator'. I'll keep all updated.

Belt Slippage

Could be that, the acutator or that you are just getting a bad reading from your boost gauge. I would get it measured with an accurate insturment. If it is low, check the obvious (above), and if not any of those, take it in.

Good Luck,
Mark

Not sure if it's relevant but was the intercooler TSB taken care of?

Detail has the ticket. Actuator adjustment was very common on the 99-00.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. Just an update, I took the air filter out today and did a quick run up the street w/ no filter. Now the boost jumps to almost 9lbs, and slowly climbs to 9.5-10lbs. So at least I know its not an internal problem. I think I will be adjusting the boost actuator this weekend. Also, don't know if it matters but the TSB was never taken care of and I don't think I have a chance of getting it done now (I do have a warranty for 7 more months though). thanks again for all the help.

why would you not have a chance to take care of it. imo it's pretty important and if your's is still under warranty i'd drive to the dealership tomorrow morning to have them look at it.

When I said I wouldn't be able to get it done, I was referring to having the Intercooler replaced under warranty. Also, it seems kind of odd but today after reinstalling the air filter the boost seems to be going up to 7-8lbs then immidiately falling to 5lbs and stays steady at 5lbs.
