Tranny Acting Funny

i have a lighting, my tranny seems to slip out of gear while driving then re-engage. so the rpms go up then it engages again and jumps forward. now when i go to reverse it wants to go forward. same with neutral. i have no reverse or a neutral. all my gears want to go forward. and when Im in park if i rev it, it revs slow like the tranny is still ingaged. do any of you know what could be the problem. i was thinking torque converter but that wont change my reverse problem. so i was thinking the vavle body may have a stuck valve or plugged hole or something.

Could be a few things, something in valvebody, manual lever position sensor on tranny is askew and telling the tranny to be in the wrong gear. Easy tested with a scan tool.

Obivious first thing should be running the codes. Is it out of warranty?

The falling out of gear sound like a speed sensor problem to me. Staying in forward gear is most likely a control problem. Valvebody problem. If you are under warranty just take it to the dealer. Otherwise see if any of your buddies have a scan tool and pull the codes. Is the OD off light flashing>??? -Mat-

Joe, which transmission is it? The Lightning 4R100 is not even remotley like the 4544E/5R55E that you likley have in the Explorer, hell, a 4R44E is not a lot bigger than one of the heads on your Lightning.
Which one is it?

I wish I had some Joe, the Explorer box is built in France and I just don't work on them, I'm told they're a lot like the 4R100 but smaller, I know they have bands which the 4R100 only has one of, and that only for M2 gear, so the shift is totally different in how it engages, I also think the 4R100 is the only rear wheel drive Ford tranny that has a stand alone accumulator, it's much more common for them to be in the wormtrail of the case.
If he was playing with the computer he could have messed up one of the solenoids, unlike the 4R100 where they are all in one valve body, the 4R44E/5R55E has them stand alone in the bottom of the tranny. Also, if the truck is a 5.0L engine it may even have a 4R70W, which is another box I son't know enough about to be offereing my advice on, sorry. You may find someone who is familier with them on the Ranger Sites, the Ranger uses the same family of transmissions as the Explorer most years, the 4R44E, 5R55E and the A4LD are all based on the same general design, and the 5R55N and 5R55S are also similar.

Hope this helps,

G

Another resource who has fogotten more about trannies than i know is a guy named Mark Kovalsky, he posts in the transmission forum, and is very active on the Diesel boards, he's an Engineer for Ford Powertrain, and really knows his stuff, especailly with the 4R70W. He works on the Torqueshift Program for Ford now, but if he doesn't know, he knows where to find out, he also happens to be a good guy.
