What is Value Tapping ?????????
From Haynes Ford manual--1997-1999 pickups, pg. 0-19:
"A rapid tapping sound or clicking sound that becomes faster as the engine speed increases indicates "valve tapping". This can be identified by holding one end of a section of hose to your ear and placing the other end at different spots along the valve(cam) cover..........."
pg. 2B-10:
5. Inspect each valve lash adjustor carefully for signs of wear or damage. The areas of possible wear are the ball tip that contacts the cam follower and the sides of the adjustor that contact the bore in the cylinder head. Since the lash adjustors frequently become clogged as mileage increases, we recommend replacing if you're concerned about their condition or if the engine is exhibiting valve "tapping" noises.
And lastly,(same pg.)
12. When re-starting the engine after replacing the adjustors, the adjustors will normally make some "tapping" noises, until all the air is bled from the lash adjustors. ........"
