Plugs/exhaust

Being as how I have done a search, and recieved no straight answer....

1) What is the deal with the spark plugs blowing out of the heads..why? when? how? Does it damage the threads?
2) After hearing the Bassani, I don't care for the higher "euro tone", I like the JDM SB, but some say it drones around 65, has anyone run dual Magnaflow Staninless oval muffs stacked w/ and x in front...if so, how does it sound?

Flowmasters are out of the question, as well as Bassani. So that basically leave Magnaflow and Dynomax.

Thanks..

Can only answer #2

I have a Magneflow cat back - LOVE IT. The only prob is it is a real B!TCH to get on. Had to take the nut off the exhaust right before where the old muffler came off, twist the ***** out of the factory exhaust, and wiggle the HELL out of the Magnaflor just to get it on... Then it was WAY too high in the cut-outs where the tips stick out, so once all the hangers were on, i had to put my sneaker into one of the tips and BOUNCE on it to get it to sit level.

It would have been 10x easier if I had the truck on a lift.

As far as sound - it's PERFECT. Yes, any aftermarket exhaust is going to be louder than stock, and drone a little to a lot. The drone is not bad at all on the Magnaflow, and the exhaust note is sweet. Low rumble at idle, loud and mean at WOT!

1) Plugs are a big issue now. They can ruin heads by ruining the threads and then you have to have new heads . Make sure plugs are on tight.
2) Magnaflow

My 'theory' is that Ford torques the plugs down TOO tight at assembly. The 'soft', aluminum heads/threads weaken and the s/c boost blows one or more out, taking the threads and part of the head with it. I just can't believe an assembler would run the plug in and leave it loose. We almost always over-tighten bolts, nuts, etc; don't we?

Btw, you asked about dual Magnaflows and I have the single(14568), stainless Magnaflow with an internal X-pipe and I love it. Absolutely NO DRONE, just a low rumble.

I dont know much about the plugs blowing but my dual flowmasters dont drone...dont know where you heard that. Maybe I have a different series? Either way its nice rumble and makes that "blub blub blub" sound at idle...I love it anyhow

I have high flow cats, long tubes, H-pipe and Dynomax Race magnums.

I haven't heard anything that sounds better.....just my opinion.

I agree with Lightningrod on the plug issue. Over torque stresses the soft threads, resulting in threads and plug exiting the head. Use a torque wrench, 1/4" drive, inch pound torque wrench is small enough to hit all plugs with the right extensions.

I just did a 02 L not to long ago and the plugs on it where so loose I could have taken them out with my fingers if I could have fit them down in there. 4 of the 8 where that bad and the other 4 where not even that tight.

what do ford factory torque specifications call for?? should the plugs be a little tighter if running extra boost? this has got me a little worried, i don't really feel like explaining to my dad why he took my truck out for a ride while i am away at school and a plug flew out the hood

Another 'thought': I always wait(overnight) when I'm going to change plugs. I think the head should be 'dead' cold so that the plug hole is as 'big' as it will get as the aluminum has had time to contract(cold). We are putting a new(cold--NOT talking about the heat rang of the plug but the condition/temp. of the metal threads) steel plug into that hole. If the hole is as 'big' as it can get, then the plug will go in easier and will be 'tight' with a 1/16th turn past snug. I also use a German, copper-based, high-temp anti-sieze on the threads and am careful not to get ANY on the electrodes or the first thread.

Am I '****' or what ?

i used anti-sieze also, use it in on the plugs in the aluminum heads on my dad's 427 Chevy, so why not in the SOHC aluminum heads? just a precaution when tightening something a lot that it will come back out...

Thanks for the plug info.

Is the basic consensus that Ford leaves them loose? Or do they take up as long as you catch them before they blow? Does any particular one go? Or completely random?

For those of you that have the JDM Silv. Blt.

again, do you feel like it drones at any point.

I personally like it, but dad is getting older, I would go with the magna packs, he would probably like the single or dual stack.

Do any of you have a sound clip for the single can Magnaflow?

Thanks
