My son has been in Bushidokan for about 4 years. Just got his green belt at the age of 13. He tears up a bunch of "Black Belts" from some of these "belt factories" at tournaments. I truly respect the styles and instructors which require you put in the time before you progress. It amazes me to see all these 8-10 year old ninja turtles with black belts.

NeedFourSpeed, you got that right. LoL. There is a karate place up in town, and you have to sign a contract and pay for a year and its like a grand (so if you quit before a years up, you are out the thousand dollars), and they say you will get your black belt in 4 years. If you pay up front for all four years, its only like 2500 and you'll get the belt sooner. And their uniforms are like billboards for their place, cuz their logo is plastered all over them.
Whenever i walk by i'll lookinside, and i gotta laugh when i see 8 year old kids with black belts on.
the one place i go to on mondays and wednesdays won't even allow anybody under 13 to train there. It took me 9 years to get my black belt, and then i see these 10 year old kids with black belts on that i could walk over and not even notice them? LoL! I'd rather know that i actually earned the belt and it take 10 years to get, than get it in 3 years by basically paying for it. Cuz if the time ever comes that you really need to use it, the kids from the "belt factories" will be at a big disadvanage.
Harley - I forgot about the Billboard gees (I know I didn't spell that right). At my son's studio you cannot even test for a brown or black belt until you are 18. His teacher is Steve Mackey, a former PKA world champion (I think). Steve also went over to Japan and won one of their national tournaments for "shoot boxing" (probably didn't spell that right either).
, don't worry about the spelling. LoL, i wouldn't do any better. Its hard enough to understand what they are saying, let alone trying to type it
anyway, it sounds like thats a really good place though. Both of my instructors have been taking karate since the mid 70's, and the one is a state trooper now, and the other one has a really really nice dojo and its pretty much his life. He's got classes monday through friday and some nights 2 classes a night.
