....Actually, the longer the rod, the stronger due to the reduced piston to rod angle at both mid strokes. This is why the modulars can turn so many more Rs compared to winsor blocks, no cam, more room for long rods. The reason the probablly throw them all the time is that they are made from the crappiest of materials. From what I know of the 4.6 SOHC and DOHC, cast would even be stronger. I think they finally figured this out with the 03 having forged internals.....

this is from a local message board talking about L's and Cobras. Post topic was about the rods, but anyway is this true?

There's truth in the physics of it; However, there are no changes to the internals on the L for 2003.

Really, the internals on the L AREN'T THAT BAD.... The motors just aren't ridiculously overbuilt, like the Supra, or something like that.

Not true. All of the stress is when the piston is at or near TDC. Rod angle is very near 0. The difference is that the longer the stroke the more torque because of the increased leverage on the crank, also the lower the RPM's. And vise versa.

That does make you wonder why Ford forged everything in the Cobra but not the Lightning that they are having to repair out of their pocket.

how "built" were the supra motors? forged internals? rods and pistons forged?

yea it pisses me off that the 03 cobras get manley rods and we dont. now i gotta go spend more money in a couple of years doing what ford shoulda done from the get-go.

They have forged rods, etc. A stock Supra motor is generally good over 600hp. There are 800HP Supras that run great, with stock internals. That's why they're such a tunable monster.

Hell, you can turn the 315HP stock Supra to a 460HP beast for about $1500... Wish you could do that with our trucks... Too bad it's about as much for a good used Supra as it is for a new Lightning!
