changing rear diff fluid...
changing rear diff fluid...
i'm wanting to take the rear diff cover off and sand/paint it.. also change the fluid while i'm there...
what paint should i use? and should it be primed?
what diff fluid should i use? i've seen mobil 1 syn in the parts stores.
is there an additive i need to put in there? what is it?
gasket? is there one? or do i use RTV?
torque specs on bolts?
i figure i'll need a pan to catch the fluid, some hand tools, a camera, a leprechaun, and other stuff... any pointers?
is there a magnet in there that needs to be cleaned?
i'm at 45k miles, i figure the fluid needs to be changed.

(I wouldn't paint it. I would just get one of those powder coated covers or something)
Use a high heat paint
You only need to prime it if you strip the old paint down
Ford recommends synthetic fluid (I forget the weight)
Not sure about a friction modifier, but I don't think it is required with synth fluid
Just use RTV to seal it
You'll prolly need a hand pump to pump the new fluid in after you put the cover on, and an air freshner because gear oil stinks

the diff cover is pretty much covered in surface rust.. looks nasty, and rust is bad..

i wanna at least make it look better than that rusty thing... maybe a aftermarket diff cover with a fill hole?
nothing flashy, i prefer function over form.

i dont remeber the company but i seen it in muscle mustangs and fast fords, its a dif cover that resembles a quick change rear, looks pretty cool i will be getting one over the winter,it also stifens the carrier, and is aluminum
I used mobil 1 synthetic fluid. I also added a friction modifyer. The tag on the diff says to use one type of oil while the owners manual says to use another. So who really knows what should be used?

Are you talking about the generic manual or the SVT Supplement? (I haven't looked). I would go by what the diff tag says.

Fitted the Ruslow panhard mount to a Mag-Hytec diff cover. Twice the fluid capacity, magnetic drain plug, o-ring seal, port for AutoMeter temp sender, magnetic dipstick. $245.
There are, however, conflicts with the anti-sway bar on lowered trucks. Have not done the fitting yet, but I think that the anti-sway bar mounts will need to be raised (and the endlinks commensurately shortened -- I'm ordering So-Cal adjustables today).
I do not think that there are any other aftermarket diff covers available for the 9.75 rear.

They also note that you must also add 118ml of Friction Modifier.
Also note that the manual says,"Your vehicle's rear axle is filled with synthetic rear axle lubricant and is considered lubricated for life."

What easter said about "considered lubricated for life" is correct however when I changed mine out at 5k it was very dirty and gritty so its not a bad idea.
I switched to Royal Purple 75W-90 diff. fluid and oh man!!......You could actually feel the truck squat a little lower and spin the tires more freely on acceleration after the fluid change!! Not much impresse's me anymore, but Royal Purple fluids do! I now have RP fluids throughout my drivetrain and love the performance gains!! There is no need to add friction modifiers with RP, they're already in there! Hope this helps.
