Come on, that's the 9-cylendar model. Only pushes out a measley 70,020HP.

Check out the bore/stroke specs - 960mm bore, 2500mm stroke!!!

As HUGE as those pistons are, they only have about 10" of stroke

That's a bit of a weight adder, though, at 2300 tons...

And, we thought the L got bad gas mileage? At full load, that thing drains 121 gallons of fuel oil per hour!!!

REally if you think about it 121 gallons per hour at max load is VERY impressive.
Assuming i am figuring this right,

42lb injectors at max for an hour, at 42psi of fuel pressure, and 8 injectors your lightning COULD use 55 gallons of fuel per hour.

=) Soooo add a few psi to that and you'll see that is really impressive for that big motor =)

Hey 125 rpm wasn't a bad guess. Actually that extra 25rpm came from a chip & filter.

Damn, The pic beat me too it! I would have bet my L that was a Sulzer. Thats what I work on! Actually, I only worked on an 8 cyl triple turbo two stroke. Now that baby was a high revv'r, yep, we could spin it up to 115 rpm in a pinch!

I'm starting work on the bell housing adapter for the MOnster Box for that one. I think it'll need some extra plates in the intermediate clutch, too.

yea and a 50 rpm stall coverter woohooo!

and what in the world would they use a motor like that for anyways?! youd figure a gas turbine would be more effecient than a gigantic piston engine

Not even close bubba!! We use those giant Sulzers on ships. The Navy (and government contract) is the only people in the world to use gas turbine propulsion as commonplace. The power difference is incredible, but so is the fuel consumption. Actually, the air craft carriers are all (except for 2) Nuke. Nuke is nothing more than a steam plant (read old fasion power plant) that has a self contained "fire" or heat sorce, and can produce "public knowlege" of 300,000+ hp to move a 1300 ft carrier "in excess of" (read double that!) 30 knots!
