Ford Planning New V-8 For '04 F-150

Last updated: 2002-11-15

Ford says the new V-8 engine it will offer in the upcoming 2004 F-150 trucks will be more powerful, quieter and more fuel-efficient than that which it replaces. The new generation of Ford's 5.4-liter V-8 will be the company's first effort with three-valve technology: two intake and one exhaust valve are used on the engines in an arrangement similar to that on many Mercedes-Benz powerplants. The Ford "Triton" 5.4-liter engine will also feature variable cam timing to help boost power from today's 260 hp to 300 hp and 365 pound-feet of torque. Ford will make the engines in Canada and will introduce them under the hood of the luxurious new F-150 due out at the Detroit Auto Show in January and in showrooms late next year.

I hope the one exhaust valve is much larger than what we have now. Variable valve timing might prove to be an interesting curve ball for the tuners.
