I suspect the calibration on this particular 80MM MAF may be off to the lean side. I just found out today that another guy in the TALON club had the same model and had to send it in for recalibration. Just trying to confirm that this is a possibility.

A lean condition would explain a lot of stuff I've experienced while racing. I have outrun chipped trucks without a chip etc...... If the Pro-M I have is incorrectly calibrated on the lean side then that would explain the 13 A/F (415rwhp) during last weekend's dyno. I talked to Danny Swanson today and I am convinced that if I hadn't discovered the lean condition on the dyno (first time I ever ran the chip), I could have really put my truck at risk. I would strongly suggest if you decide to get agressive with the tune on your truck, make sure you have an A/F run at the same time. The tuner cannot possibly know as much about your vehicle as you do.

Ultimately, the responsibility for the fate of our vehicles lies with the one that decides to modify it. I'm convinced the chip was not responsible for the lean condition which I discovered last weekend. I'm just glad I decided to check it before I put the chip in heavy use.

My very first mod was a Pro-M from SHM and I installed it at 3,000 miles. I had it on for 10,000 total. I am starting to believe that that was PART of the problem with my motor, even though it wasn't on when my engine blew. It ran like a beast with it on.........for a short period of time, but then it slack up a bit....don't know why....maybe the rings. (It wasn't the weather)

You do have a good topic started though.

I had the 80mm ProM on my 00' for about 15K. No problems.

But the truck was un-chip'd. Yup, it dyno'd at 380rwhp, 448rwtq on several dyno runs. I hung with a few chip'd, pulley'd trucks too. You can see my original dyno in my gallery. My A/F was very nice in the 12:1 range. But all the ProM was doing was leaning out the truck and accelerating that inertia dyno quicker.

I recently went to a 4lb pulley, chip. With the ProM my dyno only increased to 391rwhp and 462rwtq. The dyno graphs then became ugly with big spike in them. (I still haven't figured that out. ) With no chip, a filter, 4lb, and a ProM, the truck dyno'd at 386rwhp and 440ish rwtq. Any how with the chip I had slight detonation periodically. So my awesome tuner tried and tried to solve it. But even running a program for 87 octane my truck got more and more detonation. So I quickly decided to ditch the ProM and go with a new 90mm OEM. My tuner explained it as, they know the stock A/F tables, but with the ProM and trying to tune to it, it's a shot in the dark.

Well my truck runs good now. I still need a dyno and A/F, but with the new chip, Mass Air, the truck ran 13.3 @ 104mph for the first time ever at the track. First run ever for that matter. That was full weight, fiberglass cover, hitch, spare....80 degree Florida weather.

Cliff Notes:

ProM's lean out the truck, that's how they make power. Good for a stock truck. Bad on a pulley'd or chip'd truck.

Go_rilla,

I'm surprised you didn't remember, but a few years back, the ProM's were know to lean out the truck a bit and that they needed their calibrations checked. One reason mine is on the shelf and not the truck at the moment....was a big hoopla 2 years ago.

Doug, I've still got mine mine on my 00'. 60,000 miles, and no problems. I do have a conservative tuneup, with only a 2# pulley. No lean condition. The truck was tuned by Danny Swanson to about 11.3 A/F ratio.

I ran mine w/o a chip for 12,000 miles, and never had a hint of detonation.

BTW, mine is a composite plastic, not aluminum.

I kind of remember that from a while back, but I dare say 75% of the folks that post now weren't around then. The point I'm trying to make is this; all Pro-Ms are not created equal. If you have one on your truck, do yourself a favor and get an acurate A/F reading before you decide to get more agressive with the tune.
