I need help with 20" wheel balancing
I recently bought a used set of 99 repo 20's with new goodyear hp's and I can't seem to get them balanced correctly. I have tried several places and each of them got it zero'd on the machine. I had them put hammer ons on the inside and stick ons on the outside but back behind the part that shows.
Everybody that has balanced them has told me that there is no bent rim or bad tire but I still am getting some flutter/ bouncing at 55 to 60 mph.
Any suggestions, this is driving me crazy.
Thanks
Chris

Sounds to me as if you have a radial tire shake, The tire can read 000 but still have some shake or pull in it. I would try a static balance of all four of them. My 22's took awhile but they came out perfect!
Some aftermarket wheels do not have a true center ( they are not indexed to the outside of the wheel ). When they are mounted to a balancer the wheel is not perfectly centered. The only thing we have found is they must be balanced using a adaptor so the wheel is centered using the lug bolt holes and not the center of the wheel. Start calling around and you will find a shop that has these adaptors, you might also find a shop that has a old on the car balancer. We have had some wheels that could not be properly balanced.

I work for discount tire, and have worked there for years...ugh. so ill give you a little info on what you can do. an alloy 1 balance is definitly the way to go...and if that doesnt work, a static with tapeweights in the middle might be able to do it, but generaly a dynamic balance is better. see the problem with after market 20's and bigger is when they mold them sometimes the barrel of the wheel isnt perfect, therefore the tire doesnt mount perfectly round. this will definitly give a vibe at higher speeds. second ask discount if they have a roadforce balancer, its a super high tech balancer that can tell you if a rim is bent, the roadforce on the tire, and many other things. this spensive piece of equipment will also tell you if the tire is out of round (which can be important because this can tell you if the tire is the vibe problem, i know that f1's have a problem with this because 2 of the 4 tires on my truck where crazy out of round, but i was able to correct most of it) also do you know the numbers of ounces they were out of balance? normally if its over 4 then dont be surprised if its going to ride *****tier than stock wheels. 20's are heavy so its kinda a tradeoff of looks for ride. also have them try to 180 them maybe youll get a better balance. goodyear's also tend to not balance as well as say...bfg, yokohama, or michelin
also if they are chrome, have them do an alloy 2 because the clip weights can cause the chrome to chip prematurely (because chrome always tend to end up chipping anyways and causes leaky beads...)
sorry for the long post, i just wanted to share my hopefully useful perfetional knowledge
oh yea temperkins is right try the bolt balancer adapter plates, most coats brand balancers have them, we have them at TXD 20 (irving Tx)

find a shop with a Hunter 9700 balancer. This is the 'road force' balancer. It will either balance it or prove to you that the tires or rims are crap. In FL, the discounts didn't have them. Find the Hunter website and do a search for dealers in your area that use the 9700. It work on the 20's on my HD, and also my wifes Miata which is EXTREMELY sensitive to wheel balance. 3 other shops could not get the shake out untill I found a shop with this Hunter 9700. Good thing about them also, once balanced you don't need to rebalance every time you rotate, only about every 20k or so. Worth your while
Thanks for all the great posts guys, very helpful.
Anybody else that is having trouble balancing the larger wheels, I can save you some time and money.
Go to the Hunter site and find the nearest 9700 model to you.
I did and took my truck in to have them balanced for me.
The 9700 has a road force component, don't even think about balancing without this.
Normal, the guy told me, is about 10 to 15 lbs. on the road force, turns out that two of mine were over 70 lbs. out.
Even though they showed 000 on the balancer.
They had to get me one new tire ( they are 295-40-20 hp's with 1500 miles and goodyear replaced free) the other one they rotated on the rim and got it down to 9 lbs.
They also had the adapters that allowed them to mount the wheels on the balancer by the lug holes rather than the hub hole.
I had these balanced four other times by normal machines with absolutely no luck at all.
I wish I had inquired about this earlier.
Thanks again guys, you really helped me out.
