Question 4-cyl. Shutdown, 1-2 Fart, Torque Reduction, Or...?

Sorry no photochop today - this is a real post. I had an odd thing happen to my L the other day. I was WOT from a stoplight and the 1-2 shift scared the crap out of me. I'm familiar with the 1-2 fart and 4-cyl shutdown, but I don't think it was supposed to feel like this. When the truck shifted it felt like someone put on the parking brake for a second... I was literally thrown forward in my seat, then 2nd gear slammed in hard and all appeared fine after that. Never happened again since then. The only thing worth noting is that it was the first time the temps dipped into the 40's this season, so I don't know if I was generating to much boost or something. The power loss was dramatic and the shift very abrupt - I got the impression something was wrong. Was it torque convertor lockup? Has this happened to anyone else before? The archives talk a lot about the 1-2 burp, but I don't see much mention of power loss like the kind I experienced.

By the way my L is mostly stock (no chips, pullies, etc).

Sounds like a sticky valvbe that broke free, I wouldn't worry about it if it doesn't happen again.

I'm still experiencing sort of the same problem...When I take off on a hard acceleration the truck seems to hesitate for a sec and then it's like extra boost kicks in and the truck pulls fine right before 2nd gear.. I don't usually notice it as much in cooler temps but when its kinda humid i notice it drastically..Eventhough it hestitates, it still wants to pull but it seems like it should blast from the jump...THis is causing me missed seconds at the track...Theres no skip or anything, no codes and the truck idles great...I have new MAF, fuel pump....Any suggestions?

It happened to me too, almost just like that. Pulling out of a toll both I got on it and it practically stopped while shifting from 1-2. At that time my truck was stock. I think it is like Gregg said. Oh well it's fixed now, FT Valve Body installed and some fresh quarts of ATF.

Let me add, my truck was doing this every so often. I even took it into the dealer, drove the tech. around but it would not duplicate the problem. After the new valve body, problem solved.

Unless you've already had it done, your 99L may be suffering from the 99's fuel pump/lines problem. The lines/hoses come loose from the pump(S) and cause fuel starvation--especially on hard launches.

Maybe with the cold weather, you hit the rev-limiter, boost bypass. Sure glad my only WOT 1-2 shift problem is loss of traction.

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep my eye on it, but looks like it was a fluke and I have nothing to worry about (yet).
