Is this a Bad Coil Pack??

Just changed original plugs (12k miles) to Denso Plugs......This Coil Pack looked bad & smelled like gas

Has anyone else encountered pacs like this, and is it still functional? and more so preventable??

i dont know which one you are talking about (2 in the pic) but if a coil pack was not working right you would probably notice it while you were driving. put everything back and see how it runs. if the truck runs ok then the coil pack is good. if it feels funny or has a loss of power then the coil pack may or may not be the problem.

Hmmmmmmmmm. Neither one looks "bad" to me--not sure what you mean by "bad"??? The "smell of gas" may have come from around the plug/head threads. If it's running with that/those packs, I wouldn't worry.

The top coil looks heat warped and smelled slightly burnt. The bottom coil pack looked normal, as well as the other coil packs.

The top coil was removed from the passenger side rear cylinder, and the engine is running smooth. The spark plug from the burnt coil appeared normal.

How could this happen to the boot?

chances are.....

chances are you have a leaking heater hose connection right above that cylinder.....well known problem. If you had a coil pack go, you would know it, trust me!!! It happened to me a few days before FFW!. It's amazing how when it goes it feels like your motor blew! Easiest way to tell is to start the engine and let it run. Pull the connections of the coils one by one, if the engine doen't change at all, that means the pack is bad. If it weren't bad, you would notice a difference in the rpms and the smoothness. Make sure you pull those off quickly, if that arcs you'll get knocked across the driveway!!!

Had a seriously water contaminated coilpack that was stained very similar to the coil on top, but had a significant miss to go with it . Traced it to water filling the hole from icing down the motor between rounds. What Tallimeca said, earlier (99, 00) Ls were known to have issues with heater hoses leaking and contaminating coils on rear of passenger side cylinder head. If its not missing, I wouldn't bother, but its cheap insurance to have a spare coilpack ready just in case.

That coil pac came off a '02 L, so I guess since it's running alright, I'll just buy a backup coil pac anticipating this one to go out anytime???
