New L owner...need to know weak links
New L owner...need to know weak links
Just wondering. I see usually when these motors go they throw a rod.
What happens to the rods??
Are they breaking, is the crank flexing too much??
Has anyone tried forged rods or other forged internals to correct the problem??
How strong is the block?? can it handle 9's?? Has it been there??
OK now, after the intake, (K&N cold air kit) what is the most restrictive part of the motor?? The exhaust seems to be ample for stock or a little over, no way the 90mm tb will ever be a restriction, so my guess is the heads since guys are able to make good amounts of gains in HP wth pulley changes it wouldn't be the charger. I guess at this point, it could be the stock exhaust system before the heads with a 6 or8 lb. pulley.
Has anyone dynod there L with a 6 or 8lb pulley w/ stock exhaust, changed to a better flowing system and re-dyno'd??
On a GN, i can tell you where the most restrictive parts of the motor are, how to make them non restrictive all the way to the 9's before a stock block loses its reliability and there aint anything you can do to strengthen the block anymore. I'm just trying to learn the same things bout my L motor. Its the only way to make a performance recipe up.

Has anyone tried forged rods or other forged internals to correct the problem??Ya.....almost all the fastest trucks have them

Just trying to find out all i can through others trials and tribulations first. I see too many people do useless mods to their cars/trucks. I know how to mod any engine, just trying to figure out which order to do it in to get the best gains and understand a little more about ford motors.

Is there a tranny out there that can stand up behind a motor sending a 5000lb truck in to the 9's? I'd be willing to bet that it ain't the one the truck came with.
Now when you get that L in the 9's you know you're gonna do and engine swap and put that power plant in the GN and run low 7's

I'd be willing to bet that the L would like a 4V head. It wouldn't be the intake side (SC) but the exhaust side that the L would benefit from. Seems that the BGN would be the same way. Maybe a larger exhaust valve could be put in the stock head.
There's at least 1 person that has done the 4V heads, but I have no idea how it turned out.

clone, the engine will be coming back from a freshen up in about 2weeks and were gonna take it down to Atco. I have to have my buddy take it down the track for a 1/4 pass. I'm still doing my 1/8 mile license runs. Beleive me when tell you they get really upset when you stretch the run all the way to the 1/4. Actually they kick you off the track if you run a 9, and discount all your previous 1/8 mile runs
one of my buddies has some video SOMEWHERE he just has to go throug about 10 vhs tapes
Wendy, i don't think the stock tranny will do it either. I wonder what the L would run with a 1200 fwhp Buick motor in it??

lets see if this vid works..This is my buddies. He owns www.cottonsperformance.com , my second home. He's teaching me how to tune with my FAST system. My car is about a half second faster than his. Look for Cottons...also alot of other 9 and 8 sec. GN's

If your interested in 9's, the only thing I can tell you is you are definately going to need a built engine, some good weight reduction, a built tranny, and most likely a better blower.
Headwork and cams are still in the early stages, some with luck some with no luck.
Exhaust wise, almost everyone will agree LT's are better then shorties; and then you have those who dynoed improvements w/ LT's on, those who have dynoed no improvements w/ LT's on; some have ran same times w/ LT's on, and some who have run quicker w/ LT's on.
I'm from Conncticut and i'm gonna wait for some kind of get together to see others mods.I'm sureone of those shops has some kind of open house.
I'm deffinately not looking to go 9's with th wifes daily driver
. For now, i'd like t be able to crack off a mid 12. I really like to research a car/truck as much as i can before doing serious mods. I have a few manufacturing connections in the Buick world, and i would like to see if i can get them to develop a few things that might help. There are alot of similarities in all forced air motors, and i know w/ the GN it took many years to figure out. Rigt now, my main project is going to see if i can develop a working knock sesor. Usually if I personally hear detonation, the damage has begun. (too many Iron Maiden concerts in the 80's,ears are bad).
