I recently made an adapter plate to mount a k&n conical filter to my MAF. My question is where do I put the air temp sensor now there is no box to mount it in.

 

Just mount it near the filter

Do you think that it is safe being open in the engine compartment?

 

Yes' it'll be OK out in the open. If there is room, just drill a hole slightly smaller than the IAT sensor in the rubber boot that is part of the filter. This is the way more than one tuner handles the IAT with their filter kits.
