questions about changing gears

I have a 2000 L and IM thinking of changing the rear end gears to 3.73 or 4.10. Can anyone tell me what effect it will have at hiway speeds and how bad will the gas mileage get? Also will it increase my 60 foot times much

don't waste your time/money on 4.10, this is not a worthwhile mod in any way shape or form IMHO. 3.73 on the other hand is good, but still maybe not worth the cost involved.

just my .02

chris

Yeah, what he said. I like being on top so don't put the 4:10's in. You won't be able to handle the difference.
PS
worth every penny, and then some.

no flame 1BADTK, but just out of curiousity, what kind of numbers is your truck putting out to support the switch to 4.10s?

60ft?
1/4mile et and mph?

also, what size (diameter) tires are you running? On stock tires I don't think you'll see increased performance by going to 4.10, on taller slicks, yes, but then you are really just making up for the taller tire anyway. no?

thanks.

later,
chris

Truck runs low 12's on motor and 11's on nitrous.
MPH - 109-112.
60fts - consistent 1.7's on motor and 1.6's on nitrous.

again, what size tire?

my truck went 12.43 @ 109MPH over a year ago on F1s with 3.73

if you are running 11's maybe your mph should be higher.

BTW, my 60ft was consistant 1.80s with a best of 1.78 again on street tires.

again, no flame, i'm just looking for info to support the switch to 4.10s. without going to a taller slick, I just don't see it.

thanks,
chris

Gear Change wouldnt be in my top 4 or 5 mods..

I did it... Added gears and a chip the same weekend.. Couldnt be sure of any difference with 3.73's BUT since Ford changed to them for 2001 it is hard to argue ... IF BIG IF you know a GOOD rear end mechanic AND you have the money.

Do chip, filter, pulley, fan etc etc first

PS - Andre - 1Badtk's truck RUNS GOOD - 4.10s or no 4.10s
here is a picture of his truck from FFW Finals -

and remember thgis is in the Texas Heat, Humidity, and poor BP. If I lived in VA. I could drop those times by about .10 and add 2-3 mph easy.
this is also on 28" dia. slicks, and your 1.8's claim on F1's is a tad hard to swallow, even on one of the best preped NHRA tracks here in Houston, the best I have seen anyone pull is 1.94 60 ft. What kind of glue are you guys using??????

Andre

I pulled 1.84's at Norwalk on my f1's.. I know you wont believe it but I had 38-40 lbs of air in them at the time from the road trip...

Dang, those northern tracks must use carpet glue to prep the starting line with.
There's one thing bad about 4:10's then, it makes the F1's a piece of junk for drag racing. They will force you to buy some drag slicks.

Doug,

Who did you get to do yours ? It's next on my list along with my torque convertor. Also what did you pay if you don't mind me asking?

Wes

I had it done at Bankston Ford... They charged me 2x what they charged Sixpipes .. LOL BUT I got all new bearings etc....

It was a long time ago ... My guess is with labor and lots of parts $800 ?? I know you can get it done cheaper by a rear end shop ... If I had it to do over I would get a reference from qa TALON guy and go to local rear end place - cheaper and they do it everyday
