Towing With the L
Towing With the L
Does anybody else tow a boat or something else with their L? I have an 18' Crownline I tow with mine. I've only towed it twice so far. I was told to turn the overdrive off, so I have been. Has anybody else been doing this? Also has anybody experienced any adverse effects from towing with the L?
Any input would be appreciated!

I turn the OD off when the car is on the trailer, but just let it go into OD if its just the trailer. Gas mileage REALLY sucks when you're cruising down the highway with the OD off. But, you barely notice that anything is back there. Acceleration and braking is pretty impressive.
I've pulled a 24ft python, no problems at all. As far as overdrive off.......if the transmission keeps hunting for gears back and forth from 3rd to 4th then you can turn OD off otherwise it shouldnt matter.
Has anybody been noticing anything strange afterwards? Like loss of power or sluggish brakes or anything of that nature? I'm just trying to find out what to look for or expect. I had been towing this boat with my 97 XLT with a 4.2 V-6 5-speed, and it was killing that truck. I've noticed that it doesn't seem to even phase the L, except maybe on hils, but nothing terrible.
Appreciate the input!

I pull a 20' Bayliner with mine, no problems at all, even with OD on. In fact, I would leave OD on if you are pulling on a freeway, or once you pass 55mph.
It IS nice being able to pass people at will when pulling a boat.

i tow with mine all the time w/o turning the oD off and have never had a problem. also i love having 5000 lbs behind my truck and feeling like im only a "little" faster than everyone else.
I tow my 19' center console (about 3500 lbs) quite often. In town, stop and go traffic, I turn the OD off, mainly because it helps with braking. On the highway, I leave the OD on, unless there is a bridge or the very rare Florida hill that is a little steep. Overall, the truck tows great. The short wheel base makes it a bit bumpy at times, but that is to be expected.
The power and brakes are great. Nothing like staying right beside ricers from a light even when you're towing a boat.
