Puffs of blue smoke
Puffs of blue smoke
Ok, I have a problem with my '01 L. It has 29K miles on it, and it is totally stock. Recently I noticed that if the truck sat overnight for a couple of days, when started it puffs a considerable amount of blue smoke. It stops within a few seconds. I brought it to Huntington Beach Ford here in CA, with that complaint, and a few others. Mainly a loss of power, and the smoking. They kept it for 8 days, then called me and said it was ready. I brought the truck home and everything seemed ok, that was friday. It sat in the garage all friday night and saterday. On Sunday I started the truck up and the blue smoke was back, and the loss of power hadn't really changed. Anyone know what might be the problem, or a very good dealer to go to here in southern California? I stay in huntington beach, but will travel to a good dealer.

Chris: Your 'Location' says 'Atlanta' but you're in Southern Ca?
Do you still have the original fuel filter? If so, it's at least partially clogged with 29,000 miles. This could be a part of your loss in power. The air filter could be dirty. A coil could be faulty. Brakes might be binding. The trans fluid could be at an incorrect level causing slippage. The fuel injs. might be dirty.
As to the blue smoke, there could be a lot of oil in the intake area. You can take a 5'16" driver or a screw driver and loosen the clamp that holds the intake boot to the th/body; pull the boot away from the th/body and shine a light into the boot and the th/bores. Look for oil puddled in both places. This is a common but not a normal problem with our Ls. The oil is then injested into the combustion chambers along with the intake air. It might be worn valve seals--hope not.

Thanks
Yeah I am in CA, hehe people move you know. I just got here about a month ago, so I haven't been here long. Weather here rocks, traffic sucks, cost of living sucks..... Thanks for the suggestions, fuel filter has been changed, I will take a look at the coils.

I assume you bought the truck used ? Does it use oil, if you bought it used and the person who had it before you didnt break it in and just ran the living ***** out of it from day one that maybe why it smokes. You might try Dynoing it and see what its HP and Torque are stock it should be able to put atleast 355 or 360 and Torque somewhere around 425 to 430 if it anit even close to those numbers then i would take it back and see what ford can do.
Mine does the same thing smokes after sitting for a couple days,
it has 17000 miles on a 2001. It is only drove to church on sunday never over 35 mph
I think the smoke is from oil in the intake truck runs better every day.

Mine too is a 2001... I just cleaned my K&N and noticed the smoke too... I had it a while back when I went to Motorcraft synthetic oil (blend)... went back to the original oil... gone... been running Royal purple for about the last five changes and this is the first I've seen of it again...
I agree with the earlier post about oil in the intake... you can't tell me that the large puff of blue smoke just suddenly shows up and then disapears just as fast... it's the intake.
Sad thing... I've got the parts for the oil separator mod... just haven't done it yet... oh well.
