Silent spinning = time for new F1s?
With just over 10K on my F1s they no longer make any noise before spinning and smoking. Sometimes there may be a tiny little squeak, but I only really know they are spinning when I see tire smoke, or the rear end squiggles on shifting (happens a lot with the FT valve body now for some reason...)
Even though I am not quite down to the wear bars, is this a pretty good sign its time to do some tire shopping? Anyone who has worn out a set of these things, how long after they went to stealth spinning did you have to replace them?

2Cool, I know what you are talking about. It could be the road,,, have you noticed that on a "fresh" dark black surface you really get a squeal or a chirp and on the old faded surfaces you get the silent spinning?
I don't think tire spinning noise is a good indicator of wear since mine have been silent since I bought the 00. I am hoping when I replace them someday that the new ones will howl....

The tire squeal is the sound emitted from a tire during slippage, thus the tire surface is moving faster than the road under it is moving causing the squeal. The sound that you here is generated when the blocks of tread are stretched out of shape and snap back in to shape. They are pulled out of shape by the friction with the road and as they lose contact with the road, they return to their original shape. The pitch of the sound is determined by the tread depth. A winter or deep tread tire will emit a lower frequency sound, where as a summer tread or all season will have a higher pitch. This noticeable with new tires giving a lower frequency sound, where as the same tire with a lot of mileage will give a high pitched squeal. A racing tire which has no tread emits very little sound.

Lately most road surfaces result in quiet spinning... though the heat down here on most days (90s, and likely pavement at 120+) certainly don't help.
Makes me want to slap on some Nitto 555s (not R's). those were the loudest/smokiest tires I have used so far, at least on my old ATI charged GT.
