Hi 'O,'

I got $18,700 for my black 1999 with 43000 miles on it. This was a high bid. Most were around $14000 because most appraisers dinged it bad since it had been wrecked (no frame damage, though, since it's a new frame!)

That's $18,700 trade-in, BTW. I only paid $23,750 for it when I bought it used with 19,000 miles, so it didn't depreciate *that* much.

Yeah well, again, no offense was meant, just telling it like it is. And sorry about your accident, those can be traumatizing I suppose. And I wasn't arguing your selling it, just debating the point that these trucks are "bad" in the rain, and I stand by my assertion. I have done 90 in this thing coming back from norwalk (following some crazy white lightning with a little rabbit on the back) and it stuck to the road just great. That was my first week owning the car, and after the saleen I was a little nervous about how it might handle in the rain, but it has been great. And as I live in MI and drive it every day year round, I have had a lot of experience driving it in the rain.

High horsepower really does not have anything to do with it's traction in the rain; unless you are flooring it. It's all about the tires and these tires are awesome. Go easy on the throttle like you should in slick condions and the truck is fine. Stay out of the boost obviously, and this thing will run basically like a regular 5.4. This is the best car I have ever owned as far as performance in the rain goes. It has never once slid, fishtailed or plowed (unless I intended it to).

BTW...you got an great price on your trade-in considering it was a wrecked unit. Congrats.

BadAZZ - A beater is nice in theory, but the problem with a real beater is that it is going to fall apart, and generally will not run reliably. You will be pumping money back into that POS to get it to run properly. I guess one option is to get a nicer beater, but those cost funds that I don't have. I'm poooor.

As far as the salt chipping the paint, In MI they run gravel trucks on the freeway ALL the freaking time and they just spew rocks/gravel/dirt at you. Think it sucks in a car...its super fun on a bike!

I still have the original F1's on mine at almost 31000 miles. Do I get a prize?! Yes, they're a little bald on the outsides (love the twisties and I'm not big on burn-outs). I rotate'em every 5000 miles but man, can you say hydro-plane? H2O + 380 HP = slip & slide! I threw alcohol into that equation once... almost put her into a cement wall! Scared the crap out of me! My passenger was waiting for the air bag to deploy!

Well, you might feel a little paranoid in the Lightning after your accident, but I am not so sure you are much better off in a smallish Legacy.

I bought a 2002 WRX sedan, which I really like, and drive whenever possible. But one thing about the WRX is that I sometimes feel a little hinky on interstates in such a small (3065 lb. curb weight) vehicle.

After a few close calls with highway knuckleheads, racers and pursuing police, I was damn glad to get behind the wheel of the big ol' Lightning.

So, I now mostly drive the WRX in bad weather, or where parking is a hazard course.

Good luck on the Subaru. It looks like they make sound products. Consumers Union magazine really ranks them high on quality and reliability. And I dig AWD.

Forget if it is an L or reg truck, any 2x4 truck sucks in the snow. Mine is terrible, slides like mad unless you take it easy. As far as rain, the L does good, just no WOT, and its as good as any vehicle, if not better.

redlite,

I do wish the Legacy was a little bigger, but the price, AWD, reliablility, side airbags, and other features put it at the top of my list. This will be my fourth Subaru in 12 years. (The dual power sunroofs are a blast.)

I once got popped HARD from behind on the interstate while driving a rented Plymouth Neon. All the traffic came to a stop except a semi, whose driver was probably watching a porno tape on his dash-mounted VCR/TV combo. He hit a Monte Carlo, which carromed off his front bumper into me.

After that, I always sign for the extra insurance on a rental. Even though the semi driver was at fault, Allstate's teeth weren't sharp enough to get the trucking company to settle everything our way.
