Funny Noise :(

A couple months ago I heard a noise on startup. I as thinking that maybe it was the dreaded piston slap, but chose to ignore it. The noise would go away fiarly quickly as the engine warmed.

Now the noise is very loud. It still goes away after 30 seconds or so. I got the hood open while it was still making noise and it seemed to be coming off of the front of the engine. I'm thinking it might be an idler or tensioner pully.

Has anyone had any problems with these pullies. BTW, its a '99 with 55K miles.

I had the problem and it was my alternator. However, I still had some slight piston slap after the fix.

I'm not real concerned with minor piston slap. Those noises don't bother me. But this noise is very loud, and needs to be fixed. I just get a short time to find it before it goes away.

I think it was TZ Rider who posted a how to on the supercharger idler pulley and how to fix them if they make noise.

Is your A/C switched on when you start up? Try starting with the A/C on and then off. Mine makes a "Kaschlumpo" noise when started with A/C switched on. It goes away quickly.

Or is it more of a "shwackonowitz" noise?

shwackonowitz

It changes with engine speed. It will even get to the point that at idle I can't here it but a light tap on the throttle and it makes noise again. The longer it runs, the higher the RPM needed to hear the noise (until it goes away). I'm going to get a stethoscope and try and figure out where its coming from.
