Smoke on start up WTF?????????????
Pull the rubber boot off your T/B. I bet you have some oil in there. Most of the smoke at start up is coming from oil passing the PCV and entering the intake. The inline oil trap mod will cure it. Although it is possible that you have internal problems also.
I don't have any noticable smoke at startup. However I was curious about this oil in the intake thing. So I checked it out sat on my 6800 mile 2002 L

Do a search on this site a lot of info posted around 8 months ago. My motor was replaced due to excessive smoke on start up, cloud could be huge at times and truck was using a quart of oil every 400 - 600 miles. Good luck and BTW Ford does know about this problem.
Another thing that can cause this symptom is a slight leak in a head gasket. When the motor is shut off the pressure builds in the radiator causing a small amount of antifreeze to leak into a cylinder. When the truck is started, it comes out as white smoke. Try relieving the pressure from your radiator after you shut down, start the truck to clear it then start it again in an hour or so. Hope this helps. Not a good problem to have!
My Lightning blew a cloud of blue smoke at startup from day one! After initial startup it didnt smoke. Finally one day I noticed a puddle of oil under it so I took it in to the dealership and they found the passanger side head gasket leaking at the rear. This was with only 4000 miles on the truck and had nothing to do with it blowing oil out at startup though. After removing the head they found the valves on the #1 cylinder were coating heavily with burnt oil!
The valve stem seals on that cylinder were bad, so after it sat for any given length of time oil would drain into the cylinder and burn off at startup. It would use about 2 quarts every 1500 miles or so!! If it hadnt been for the oil leak, they may have never found the problem. The gasket was also blown on the #2 cylinder and I never knew it. Since they replaced the head I havent had any more issues with blowing oil out at startup. I bet your having the same problem. If your passanger side head is leaking there will be oil residue running onto your tranny's bell housing. If so, take it in and they will replace the head and if there are any other problems, they'll find it. Otherwise your gonna be making several trips to the dealership so they can try and locate the problem. Best of luck!!
