Dyno Tuning. Worth It?

Hey everyone,
The new motor is running real good. I have an appt on Oct 3rd to get it tuned on a dyno. When I go to get it tuned, my mods will be - 6lb, air filter, chip, then the motor and tranny. I will be running this setup for a few months untill I put on the whipple. My question is this: Is it worth it to get it tuned on the dyno? They are going to charge me $50 to override my current programs and $175/hour to rent out the dyno and to be tuned. They said on average it takes 1.5 hours to tune 1 program. I have a 4 way chip but I only plan on gettin 2 programs tuned. So thats a total of about $600. Are the power gains over a "mail order" chip worth it? Anyone have any before and after dyno tune numbers?

Thanks

If you really tell Sal what the truck is doing, he can get it real close over the mail. My "In Person from Tuner X" didnt make as much power as my mail order one from Sal....

ICULOKN- do you run at moroso? I am going out there this weekend and thought it would be cool if i could check out some Ls while i was there.... by the way... your truck looks sweet. and is "tunerX" the "florida tuner" or is it just some random place with a dyno.

What I think ill do is keep my dyno appt for the 3rd of next month and in the mean time have sal tune 1 program on my chip. Then once I go to get it tuned, ill let them tune 1 program then do back to back dynos with their program and sals program and see which one makes more power.

Anyone else have any comparisons with "mail order" tunes and dyno tunes?

We are on different coasts but my mail order tune from Sal was right on the money when several months later I took the truck to Sal for a dyno date

I would wait and dyno tune w/ the new blower. You should be able to get a great tune w/o a dyno session since your mods aren't out of the ordinary.

My 2 cents are
You have a engine built by Sal, because of this I would stick with his programs.

If you have a problem with someone elses program, you will be responcible for the damage. If you run Sals program I am sure he will stand behind the motor.

Joe, I'd at least get a baseline dyno run for Sal to tune from. Make sure and get an A/F graph throughout the entire group of runs.

That way, he can see what the truck is doing, and keep you safe.

Make sure you pull the battery cable prior to the first run. This will wipe the adaptive codes and get a clean slate. Record the ambient temp and humidity might help out. Knowing that the A/F sensor is in good shape helps. They used a tailpipe insertable on my pulls. I recorded A/F on all runs..cost about 10-20 bucks more for the A/F. My understanding that the lower you start RPM wise without downshifting, the better the torque figures look. I faxed all my stuff to Sal. He checked it out and spoke with me about being able to extract about 25 more horses. My A/F ration was very fat all the way up. He leaned it out..not to the max but a safer tune ...still runs lots stronger....
