Two oil changes in two days....
Went with the Motorcraft 5W20 Premium Blend yesterday with a Motorcraft filter. This morning when I start my truck I walk out of the garage to pick the newspaper up off the front lawn and I hear some nasty slapping going on. Sounds like bearing or piston knock.
So........after doing some reading here I decided to try an alternative...Mobil 1 5W30 with Mobil 1 filter.
Same thing. This sucks. Anyone have a similar situation? Do I need to be worried about this? I NEVER heard this noise before changing the oil. BTW..engine has 10,200 miles on it. Unfortunately, I don't know what the previous owner was using. Whatever it was...it didn't produce this nasty sound.
Thanks..

Is it the "marbles in the can sound"? If so it seems alot of people get that after an oil change.. I fill my filter before installing it, haven't had that problem yet...I was using Motorcraft blend, but I switched to Mobil 1 synth. last time, 19k miles.....no sound with either......JR
Just so you'll know how freaky some peaple can be.
I just got a new engine in my truck, ( CP pistons) and it makes a piston rattle when its cold. So I have been jumping back and forth between 5W30 and 15W50 Mobil 1 to see wich one does what and I have done this about 3 or 4 times now. Last oil change was in there about 150 miles. Its all in the name of "Science"....at least thats what I tell myself.

Dan, this is actually pretty common.
My truck has done it since the first day that I owned it. Mine even did it with the original Ford break in oil.
It stops once the oil pressure comes up. It only does this for 15-20 seconds. The Tech's at my dealership said that a lot of 5.4's do this, and it has something to do with the hydraulic adjusters on the cam followers. It sounds like they are bleeding down overnight, and they need to pump back up.
I found that running 10w30 helps a little. It hasn't caused any problems, as I have over 55K miles, and it still runs strong.

I was so bothered by my "marbles in a can" sound that I brought it to the dealer, had them call SVT who explained it is normal and I also made sure it was documented just to cover my a$$. It now doesnt bother me, I just did my 6th oil change and I dont even have 10,000 miles on it and I barely notice it anymore.
I posted a thread about this last year because mine was so bad. And I always filled the filter during an oil change. It's still strange to me that about 1/4 of the trucks do it and the majority don't. Thankfully, mine doesn't do it as bad anymore and I don't know why except for a theory - parts seating. I just kept driving it and one time I let 8k miles go by before I changed the oil. It was the first time time I let the oil get dark since I owned the truck. I changed it and the noise has diminished greatly. Now, neighbors don't hear it. I also found that the 820S filter and Havoline synthetic 5w30 were best for minimizing the noise after about 10 oil changes experimenting one month. I had always used Mobil 1 in my other cars and my L didn't like it too well.
I, like Jay, was told by the dealer that they thought it was cam followers, but I'm not sure I buy that one. My noise is WAY deep in the engine best heard down by the oil pan. No problems yet, but I do let the engine get to full temp before romping on it.
