Maximum mph for 1st gear downshift?
What are you guys seeing? Is it beneficial to be higher than the stock program for performance. If you guys are doing 30/35 or higher will your L downshift into 1st. Just curious to what others are seeing..
So then I assumed your L is quicker because of this..Maximum 1st gear speed is approx. 46 mph if your shift points are at 5500. Stock is approx. 43.
At 25 in 1st you are approx. at 3000 rpm, which is RIGHT in the sweet spot of these motors in terms of peak tq curve. At 30 you are at 3600. And 35 you are at 4200 approx. If you make the vehicle downshift any sooner than 25 basically, then you are just wasting time IMHO by all the gear changing. It may feel faster, but in reality it will not be.
This is just my observations and I'm open to what others think about this theory...

Who said anything about bench racing? Those are facts on torque curves, engine rpms and downshifts. While your downshifting the other guy is pulling..Do you have any legit evidence other than SOTP's feel? I'm looking for facts not feelings.

I don't agree with "while your downshifting the other guy is pulling" for this reason......when your at like 35 mph put your shift lever in 2nd and take off, your torque convertor doesn't fully lock up and kinda bogs. Now take off from a 35 roll and let your truck downshift into 1st and flash the chit out of the convertor

Ok...I'm about 45 miles south of Chicago.
For me to make those bench racing comments I might have tested them in the real world don't you think?:o

I dont think anybody is pissed. But I do think these guys are onto something here.
My opinion is they are both right. A high mph drop into 1st gear is a kick in the ***. But Jeff is also right in that it might not be the fast way. But it also depends on pulley size. If you are running a 4, 5, or 6+ lb'er then dropping into 1st at anything more than 20 to 25 mph would likely be a waste of time.
If you are stock or have a 2lb pulley then maybe a higher mph would be more effective.
I personally run 4.10 gears, a PI converter and a 6lb pulley and I can tell you that shifting down at almost any mph is a waste of time. I lost a race to a vette a while back because of this, the truck just sat and spun its tires while I watched mister corvette drive off. Dale
PS I think the gears are coming out, that was one of the first mods I made and now they are just too much.

That is exactly what bench racing is......stating facts. I have never raced to tell you the difference, but I would if you like

I'm with soap on the 1st gear downshift......lets see when mine downshifts to first at 30mph i sometimes have a lot of wheelspin...depends on the pavement. but if im at 33 mph when it will not shift to anything but 2nd i dont have that problem and i dont have all my boost yet---needle jumps to around 10. Soap if you dont mind me asking wtf kind of program do you have on ur chip that allows you to downshift to 1st at 39mph???? Thats insane.
