K&N panel filter
K&N panel filter
I've had the K&N panel filter in my L for about 5k miles. Took the truck into the dealer today for scheduled maintainance and they called me to say that oil was found all the way from the box back into the throttle body. The tech (who was very non-judgemental about the whole thing) said that they have noticed this problem using the K&Ns in Ls.
The dealer is dissasembling and cleaning everything then reassembling and installing a stock filter. The truck has been running great, but the tech said it could present a problem down the line.
I have seen several posts mentioning oil in the intake areas and I'm just wondering if K&N over-oils some filters or if maybe the filter itself is not such a great idea.
Any thoughts?

Mostl likely, it's not the K&N causing your oiling issue. Lightning's are known to pull oil into the intake.

Thanks for the feedback in advance.
You should search for some threads on oil seperators. Some guys have been installing these to take the oil out of the air that comes in the breathers, but others have no oil coming in. Its supposed to be a cheap mod and I read that razors edge also sells them now.
Have you ever cleaned/reoiled the
K & N? If so, common situation to overoil filter after cleaning? If you think you may have done this reclean thoroghly and very lightly reoil. Also, many, including me, put only 5 1/2 qts of oil when changing. This eliminated problem for me.

The problem isnt the fact a K&N leaves oil in the intake tract. Its that the K&N can place oil residue on the hot and cold wire on the MAF which causes the computer to stumble @ idle, etc. I discovered this problem years back on my Cobra. Simple shot of brake cleaner every couple 1000 miles solved that problem.
To me, the tech working on your truck is placing a known problem on your K&N filter. What a bonehead.Go back and ask the tech where this brown motor oil crap is coming from. If he can prove its the K&N doing it, then let him put the stock filter setup back in.
Are the powerstack filters all the tuners use oiled or not?

Exactly. 5 1/2 qts of oil does the trick.
And I think the oil separators are freaking ugly. G
