Rebuild question

Just something that I have been thinking about and wanted to run by some of you. I will be pulling my motor apart very soon to find out why I have so much rattle in the engine. It has been like this since put back together with CP pistons. Think it is because the engine builder that I took the parts to put too much clearence in the cylinders.

That is not my question, my question is: I am not thinking about replacing the blower and the Eaton can only be spun but so fast. Has anyone thought to put higher compression pistons in and just run a say 5# pulley? This should help with more low end torque and run the Eaton hard but still build great power.

Hey, Tommy. how are ya doin'? Sorry to hear about the noises in your engine. As far as going to a higher compression piston for your rebuild, it might be a good idea to consult with one of the Big Three Tuners to see if it's a good idea or not. Ford put lower compression pistons in these L's because the blowers inherently create higher cylinder pressures as a result of how they force feed the engine. Any extra pressure beyond a certain point might create other problems, (blown head gaskets). Anyway, I'm not a rocket scientist but I would certainly do some major research on the subject before shelling out the dough for a set of high compression pistons that might not be compatible with our engines safe paramiters, good luck with your rebuild, and let me know what you come up with, maybe I'll see you at the track (Atco) in the Fall, later, John H.

Before your pull that apart, keep in mind the forged pistons will be very noisy on cold start up. Check with some of the others running built motors with forged pistons for their feedback. Slightly higher compression may work to a point. The big advantage of a bigger/faster blower is more air. The result of more air is higher compression in the cylinder. Air in, air out. How well can you make it flow.
