Factory Tech Valve Body Install Question

Reading the instructions for the valve body installation, one of the requirements is a torque wrench that measures in inch\lbs. Needless to say, I went through my tool inventory and me being a shadetree mechanic, the only torque wrench I have is one that measures in feet and newton meters. I went to Sears and Home Depot and neither has one. I questioned my friends and none was aware that such a torque wrench existed. My question is, if I have to torque something to 80-100 inches\lbs does that also equate to, lets say for example, 7 ft\lbs which in theory could also be said as 84 inch\lbs. I really dont want to have to order another tool that I'll only use once. Any help would be appreciated and if its a stupid question, you can rag me about it with no hassles from me.

You can do the math and convert it to ft-lbs, but I don't suggest it, as it's not as accurate in getting you the right in-lbs. I suggest calling around to your local auto parts stores, many of them rent out tools so you won't have to buy anything.

harbor freight has one for a decent price. Might check a tool rental place too.

Like scales for weighing (people, fish, meat, etc), they say they're most accurate in the middle of their range. I too thought I'd convert for my torque wrench, but it would have put the reading way low on the scale - - - I agree with Sal.

RhinoSlug,

I too was in the same delima that you find yourself. However, my local sears shop did carry the inch lbs torque wrench. It cost me a whopping $69.95 plus tax. To do the job without a big mess I poked a hole in the old tranny pan as suggested on this board and then wrapped a garage towl around the torque wrench to keep the remaining fluid from getting onto it. After I torqued the valve body to spec. I converted inch lbs to ft lbs to torque the 4x4 pan to spec. The craftman torque wrenches come with a conversion chart included in the package. The good part of my story is this, after I finished the install I cleaned up the head of the torque wrench and placed it back in the original packaging and returned the blasted thing back to sears for a full refund! I just could not justify keeping the torque wrench for a single job.
Great product, just was not 100 percent satisfied with the price.... If all else fails I think you can order the craftman on line from sears.

xfactor, how do you like your FTVB? I am either going to get one of those or just do the line mod valve.
Does the VB make the truck shift hard even at part throttle? I think the line mod valve only affects shifts at WOT.

Valve body will do the same thing as mod valve only by not raising line pressure.

Sounds like they are soft shifts when you drive it soft, and hard when your drive hard........ I plan on getting one soon, because I'm sick of my chip changing the shifts.

01Lightning -
I'm really happy with. The install was really easy just messy and it shifts much nicer. It feels like the truck just jumps on the 1-2 shift I'd say the shifts are firm on mid to full throttle but if you're just babying it then it shifts pretty smooth although still firmer than stock.
I definitely recommend it.
