mmmmm Brakes

Added some brake photos to my gallery under "suspension". Check out Stop-Tech for braided stainless lines. DOT approved and not too expensive. After much research and inspection I chose the Stop-Tech over Brembo. Let you know in a couple of weeks how well they work.

4 or 6 piston? What were some of the factors that led you to choose StopTech over Brembo?

Thanks,

John

Ok, you guys keep giving me reasons to get rid of my Lightning. Not only do I get horrible GAS mileage, but also horrible MOD mileage!

I have to fill up on mods TWICE as often, since I've been coming here!

Silver-Bolt, where'd you get them? The stock brakes suck! I don't have a Lightning, but I don't think the L brakes are upgraded, are they? I was looking at Brembo, but I don't think the bank will let me skip some house payments!! I'm really interested to know how these work for ya.

www.stop-tech.com talk to Robert (GM) or Matt and tell them Lightning Bill from Oregon sent you. A few small differences in the calipers. #1 is the top brace between the pads on the Stop-Tech, Brembo has none. This greatly reduces caliper flex which can lead to uneven pad and rotor wear. #2 the S/T caliper is a 4 piston caliper where all 4 pistons are 44mm in diameter. The Brembo caliper is also a 4 piston but uses a 40mm/44mm combination to compinsate for the uneven pad wear. #3 The S/T caliper is setup to use Porsche pads which are available in an endless aray of compounds and from many different mfg'rs (read cheaper pads). The Brembo uses Ferrari F40/F50 pads (read more $$). Keep in mind these differences are only under extreme circumstances. The Brembo is a fantastic setup. I am no way intending to bad mouth them. I am merely offering my findings. Check with S/T for any pricing. I did not buy the kit. I bought their calipers, pads, brake lines, and rotors. I made my own hubs and had used rotor hats and brackets. By no means a cheap system, but substantially less than the Brembo. Worth a look. I won't be installing for a couple of weeks. Other priorities came up (like roofing the house). My brake install will include the front setup, new drilled rear rotors and pads, and a line-lock. I will post as I go. I will also be running Ate Super Blue Racing brake fluid.

The L brakes are "upgraded" in the sense that they are larger than the stock F150 brakes--F250 in the front and Expedition in the rear, I believe. But they still suck.

I just bought some used Brembo$ on a lark. I'm sure I will live to regret the decision--right at pad replacement time, I'm guessing.

If I had known that there was a lower-priced solution from Stop Tech (assuming that it really is lower cost without the machining, etc.), I would definitely looked that way first. However, Brembo did not get to be the cat's meow in brakes without doing something right. No center brace? Differential versus same-sized bores? I'm sure Brembo can spew propaganda on why they are better than the Stop Tech's also. I don't think you could go wrong either way--or Alcon, Baer, Lockheed, or any other racing brakes, so long as the kit is engineered with the stock ABS and brake bias in mind.

My $0.02.

Tim, you probably did okay if you picked up your Brembo's used. MSRP for MSRP, the StopTech will save atleast a grand for similar performance. On our Solo2 stuff, we'll probably never have enough stress to have any issues with any of it, with either system being overkill.

Also keep in mind, if you're drag racing only, you really don't need these...go get some better pads, a higher BP fluid and something like Stan's rotors and you'll be great and save yourself $2-3k.

I need to pick me up some rear rotors... gotta talk to Stan, I'll porbably get his frozen ones.

I can tell you one thing, upgraded brakes RULE, my truck stops FANTSTIC now, no heat fade, excellent gripping, its amazing... now that I bought a second car, I have to relearn how distances for regular brakes. I wonder if they make an upgraded brake kit for '93 Cadi STS's.

Tim,
You hit the nail on the head. If money were no object I would be running the A/P 6 piston/6 pad caliper. Each caliper has 6 individual brake pads. Very nice. This will do. For now.
