Question Mr. Alternator high output alternator

Well I got my high output alternator and tried to put it on Saturday. After ripping everything apart, mounting it and putting the whole car back together, it squealed like a beatch! That is of coruse because the Mr. alternator had a 5-rib pulley instead of our 7-rib, and the 5-rib was significantly smaller.

DOH!

I replaced the stock alternator and went on my way.

Now I called them today and they said to simply throw the old pulley onto the new alternator.

Couple of questions:

1) How can I check the output of the alternator? It looks EXACTLY like the stock one and since I'll reuse the stock pulley, I want to make sure I'm not getting taken.

2) What does overdriving the alternator do?

1.) Look at the internals. The high output will have more/thicker windings.

2.) Over speeding it will simply wear the brushes/bearings quicker. The bigger wheel will actually SLOW it down.

I had three 200A altenators on my rolling "boom box" ('88 MX-6 with 24 15's and 9000 watts) that used Ford's standard casing. It's all in the guts.

I thought so...

I figured it was in the guts, but I wanted to make sure.

I proably don't need it, but since I have an additional 40A draw at idle(fan and water pump), I thought it would be useful....

Coldie,

What model alternator did you buy? I got the 200 AMP last week and haven't had time to slap it in yet. I will check my pulley to see if they sent the correct one. Did you leave the stock wire from the alternator to the starter relay or did you upgrade to a 4 gauge or 2 gauge wire?

Coldie,

Installed my new alternator tonight had to swap pulleys the stock pulley is larger diameter than the one that came with the new Mr Alt. I also had to take off the cable extender from the stock unit and bolt it on the new unit so the stock main cable would hook up at the top of the alternator. Other than that it was a good fit and the power to the accessories seems to have improved quit a bit.

Hmm...

I didn't have to do anything with the main cable.

My truck is curently in the shop, as soon as I get it back, I'll throw the alternator in.

I didn't...

When I installed mine, the alternator just fit right in...

I got the pulley off with an impact wrench. No other way to do it.

I haven't had a lick of light dim with mine and I'm drawing about 200 amps with the system and also the electric fans.

A optima battery always helps out too you know?

You can get the outut checked at any place like checker or autozone, but it needs to be on your car. I used to work at checker--- all of the pulleys i did just unbolted with some muscle. While working there two years - 70% of the alternator replacements I did were for older Ford taurus
