Is The Increase In Performance from 3.55 to 3.73 Gears Worth The Cost?

I am thinking of switiching out my 3.55 gears to 3.73 gears and was wondering what kind of performance increase I would see as a result? Also could anyone recommend which brand of gears to go with and how much should I expect to spend?

If your going to do the gear swap just go with a 4.10 then. Thats what I want to do with mine.

Found a guy to do the gear swap with gear and install for 550 bucks, and I know he can do it sweet!! just waiting for the gear to come in now.

Ford Racing P/N M-4209-H373 list price at the dealer is $199. Should be able to find it cheaper. fordpartsonline? That is for the Gen2 9.75" rear end.

I think 3.73s are a good choice. I had mine done the summer after I bought the truck for about $600 installed at Bankston Ford. Probably a little on the high side, but wanted to retain the warranty. Don't know that much about the 4.10s, but I do know that 3.73s were the only gear choice from the dealer at the time I made the change. 3.73s help reduce the big gap in the 2-3 gear shift and still allows me to turn the overdrive off when running the 1/4.

Hankfan,
I had the swap from 3:55 to 3:73 done about a year and a half ago. I went from running 13.1's to 12.7's just like that.
Before you all get too excited and the BS flag comes up, I also had them through on: Electric fan, cobra water pump, 2 lb. lower, and a s/b throttle body. It was all done at the same time but that combo with the gear swap made the truck feel like a new animal.

So I would say, do the switch to 3:73

Bill
