Question Some Mods a waist of money?

Ran into a fellow lightning owner on the highway, his list of mods are 01 L diablo chip, throttlebody, massair, ramair kit,Bassini full exhaust,no cats,powercooler,waterpump,electricfan,plugs,4lb pulley lower,4x4 transpan, shiftkit, etc. The point is this compared to the small list of mods I have he wasnt that much faster.Dont get me wrong he was faster but not enough to where I would spend all that money. The only reason he pulled me in my opinion is he has the 373 gear as to my 355s Just my .02 worth..Thanks
P.S. No I didnt hit the spray..

Some Mods a waist of money?

I don't think so... Your chip and pulley would probably kick my *** now. These trucks are seriously fast from the factory. Take my word for it I have owned, driven etc... some very nice cars in the last 30 years. I have spent many hours and many dollars in the past just to get a car into the high 13's. Any money spent on an "L" is well spent

useless things

Things that are useless (or close to it) for straight line acceleration:

throttlebody
Bassini full exhaust
no cats - actually a loss!
powercooler - assuming it wasn't iced
waterpump
4x4 transpan

So yeah... a lot of his stuff didn't help. Note that I said in straight line acceleration on the street.

Yours should have been just as fast....you're running more boost. Also with his gears ,you would have an advantage up top with the shorter gearing.

As I said in my post we were on the highway(rolling)Traction wouldnt have mattered. Also If you read my post I didnt use the N.O.S...The cooler was iced.Im just saying 1500dollers exhaust,300 or so for TB,Aluminum drive shaft 200.00?,After market MAF,Electric fan is what 300.00?Cobra waterpump?Im saying that there are some mods that are a good bang for the buck. Some in my opinion are a waist of money. However from a dead stop,(A drag race so to speak)Maybe the mods would have shined through..Even the owner of the truck was a little surprised
when I told him what I didnt have done to the truck...

1) If your on the freeway how is your "cooler" iced (powercooler)?? Those things go through an entire bag of ice in one pass down the 1/4.......if your on the frreway the water in the box would be warm.

2) If the guy had an 01 like you said..he already has an aluminum drive shaft (which does nothing for speed anyway).

3) Again if he had an 01 he already has a 90mm MAF, so why would he get an aftermarket one??

4) The electric fan/waterpump is a great mod, especially for drag racing, you are clueless.

5) Never mind this is getting boring.......

Hey joe,
No need for the name calling we are not 12yrs old,at least Im not.
I know it comes with an aluminum drive shaft,However mine doesnt there for I would have to buy one right? The aluminum drive shaft is for less rotating mass, there for more power right? As far as a after market maf.I dont know just what I was told.I thought the same thing.I know a lot of poeple w/99,00
Ls that went to a after market 80mm maf, when they already had one.Do you know why they did this I dont.As far as ice in the cooler he just got on the highway from a local hangout. As far clueless,I dont know about that just stating my opinion. This was just a harmless post, sorry if I hurt anyones feelings

in MY opinion

my thoughts and only my thoughts= valve cover oil breather cap or caps no good= actual loss of power and does not stop oil blow by.
throttle body to much mula for the performance gain

turning torque reduction off = premature wear on clutches 1st to second

leave line pressures alone on chip burn opt for gregg evans valve body instead.

But then again i am new at this L thang and have gotten most of my info from the L boards, which in itself you have to really take time to read and fully understand b4 making a sound desicion, not all post's are factual or true info , but if it where not for the GREAT info i have gathered so far , i couldn't reply to this thread.

mods and gains

here's what i have noticed on my truck. My father's is stock so i can compare them at any given time

chip=huge difference

pulley=don't have one yet, but someone i know just put a pulley on and everything else is stock-says huge gain. Now combine the pulley with other mods

fan kit and water pump=huge difference. Runs cooler, especially at the track.

throttle body=noticeable difference. Was hesitant but got a good deal on the accufab unit. Noticeible difference no doubt.

now, without the fan, pump, and tb, my best run was 13.5, which was about 65 degrees out, low humidity

with the fan, pump and tb, i ran a 13.3 at FFW and the track temp was well over 100 and the air was so thick you could cut it. My 1/8 mile times and mph were way better. My 60's are consistantly 2.0-2.1 so those really arent' a variable. That's a 2 tenths difference. Now i didn't make another run to back that up so we'll se what happens but you really could feel the difference.

The chip, no doubt is the best bang for the buck, but mods are like a puzzle, you gottle put them together right. Each has an effect on the other.

heres the way i think of it.
the more mods you get, the less power they make, the more they cost...

did that make sense? there are a few exceptions like upgraded blowers and nitrous, which are expensive but give you tons of power. but for the most part, that statement is true.

example:
chip and pulley = $450 = up to 40RWHP and 60+RWTQ
electric fan-water pump-t/b = $900 = 15RWHP and 20RWTQ(if your lucky)
