Lightning "Cool-ness" quotient
Part of the fun of driving this truck is some of the looks you get: seems like every kid under 21 knows what these trucks are, and they are rare enough around here that you don't see one just every day.
This was really brought home yesterday. Cruising thru town running some errands, and happened to get right behind a gorgeous, new, red Corvette: top down, blond riding shotgun. As we drove past the Subway shop, the group of guys sitting around the outdoor tables all turned, gawked and pointed at...my new red L, not the Corvette. Times sure have changed! When I was a kid I would have killed for a Vette.
I love this truck!

You want cool? Try driving around in my 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible on a nice day with the top down. 390, 4-bbl V8, dual Flowmaster exhaust. I had five complements on the way to the gas station this morning. One at a stop light and four more at the gas station. Oh, and I can carry three blondes (and have!) in my Galaxie. Will people be collecting Lightnings 38 years from now?
Actually, I think Lightnings have excellent potential as collector vehicles. High performance; excellent looks, exotic engines; LOW productions numbers. Check out the Feb 2002 issue of "Collectible Automobile," for an excellent article on the Lightning as a "future collectible."
I get to many of the car shows in SE Minnesota and keep seeing this gorgeous early 60s (1962,63,64?) Ford Galaxie convert. Has the original (#s match) 427 cu in / dual quad engine; MINT! He claims it's one of only a handful left (not that there were that many to begin with).
For years I have wanted a 60s classic, but lack the time, space and body and paint skills to get into it. Bought the L with the idea of "instant hot rod," with collector potential. Time will tell.

Yeah... even people who don't know what it is will say something like "That's a pretty truck".
Girls dig it... well, some of them. One girl told me that it wasn't a "real truck"... from the school that all trucks need to be lifted 4 inches with giant mud tires... After the ride she said "That was awesome... but it's still not a real truck"
Bah
Was funny when I heard two guys talking about my truck at the gas station... "It has the same engine as a Mustang GT... that's why it's so fast".
hehe

Hmm.. 38 years ... Yes, but probably not for the same reasons we would:

At least with the bed there will be room for a couple of 100 gallon transfer tanks.
When it worked I got a lot of looks but not nearly as much as my friends 97 F350 with 10" lift anf 44s. I would rather have my tuck over his though. I see about 2-3 lightnings a month. Not including motoXracer21 who is a friend, i see him all the time...
