the never ending quest...
I'm on my never ending quest to find a second car to suppliment my Lightning, and have never made a decision yet.
I'm looking for the opinion of you guys here... I might be able toget my hands on a 1994 BMW 850Csi coup. Its the 6-speed V12, I think they made like 200 of them or so. It would be in the mid to high 30's for it, has 67000mi and is in great shape.
Yes/no? Waste?

I like the 8 series coupes, but ...
My late father had a 750iL in the early 90s. It was not the most reliable car. In fact, it was much worse than my mother's 740iL. Most of the service/recall issues dealt with the V12. BMW service is quite expensive, and MUST be performed on a regular basis, so be prepared for it. BMWs are very definitely not appliances, such as Hondas. So long as you approach it with an exotic car mindset I think you will probably enjoy it immensely.

Thats the kind of information I am looking for.
Do you know what the maintenance schedule was? I mean is it the basics, regular oil, lubes, etc? Or is there specific pieces that must always be replaced at specific intervals?

The bad news is BMW maintenance is a tad spendy. However, the very good news is you don't have to do it often! My 1999 E36 chassis 328i Cabriolet only requires an oil change every 15,000 miles. The schedule:
15,000 mi Oil Service
30,000 mi Inspection I
45,000 mi Oil Service
60,000 mi Inspection II
... repeats at 75,000, etc.
The Oil Services are somewhere in the $125-150 range, the Inspection I is somewhere between $350-450, and the Inspection II is a bit higher. The prices are no more steep than what I paid for my Acura Legend maintenance, and the frequency is far less! Five typical 3,000 mile $25 oil changes add up to roughly one 15,000 mile Oil Service.
Do NOT take your Bimmer to Kwik-E-Jiffy-Speedy-Mart-Whatever-Lube for maintenance.
My BMW tells when you first start it how much time is left (in colored bars) before the next service, then announces the type of service required.
I haven't been sorry; we treat it well and love its reliability thus far. When maintained properly and treated with respect, it will last a long time.
One last piece of advice - try to obtain its service history. If it hasn't been maintained properly and regularly, you will be in for a wallet-thrashing down the road. Good luck, Pawn!
