EDIT: Went to great lakes last night!

First time to Great Lakes Dragaway...actually... first time at a track period.

hopefully I won't pee my pants and my adreniline will stay under control when launching 2nite...

I'm going with a friend who's L ran 11.80 in 90 degree weather, so hopefully he can help instruct me...

Wish me luck (or don't, see if I care! )

Are those butterflies in my stomach, or is that just the taco bell I had for lunch???

Thumbs up

A little tip to a beginner, (assuming street radials)

Roll fwd very slowly til the "staged" light (2nd one) comes on.

Then STOP! (this will stage you "shallow")

Then when the second yellow comes on.... GO!
Do not move a muscle before the 2nd yellow and don't wait for the green. (It's not a stoplight)

Staging shallow the very first time will help to buffer your reaction time. Then as you become more comfortable with it all you can stage deeper.

WOT

What does shallow staging do to me in terms of 60' time and reaction time?

Why is it better to stage shallow for a beginner?

Someone correct me if i'm worng but if you launch from shallow stage you get a longer run up the quarter mile. The ET clock doesn't start (meaning the ReactionTime clock doesn't stop) until the stage beam is completed, so by the time the car has rolled out from stage its already travelled a few inches. This can decrease your ET and increase your Reaction Time. A deep staged car starts the clocks sooner because less of its roll out is behind the stage beam. You will have better RT's but worse ET's. Deep staging is good for bracket racers where the driver needs to be first to the line but without running too quick and breaking out, but increases the chance of a screw up.

Hey John, how are ya doing. Since your timing does not start until you break the second beam, you can get better times because you are already rolling with some speed by the time you break this beam by staging shallow.

I think you will also find that leaving the line from idle rather than winding it up with your foot on the brake will give you your best times. Also, go around the water box if you are on stock street tires. Maybe do a small burnout getting to the line to get a little heat in the tires but the water will only hurt traction.

Remember to bring long pants and a helmet. GLD rents some helmets but are in very limited supply.

Have fun.

P.S. Any L owners in Southeast WI and Northern IL, the Wisconsin Chapter of the SVTOA is having an event at GLD this Sunday. SVTOA members will receive a $5.00 discount at the gate, racing by SVT class with trophies, tours of the tower, a special block of parking in the pits, and track instruction for beginners. It's also Fun Ford Day at the track so there will be many Ford brothers (and sisters) there as well. Join us if you can.

TImes are in...

Well first time at the track...

Moderately happy with my times...

My best of the night time wise was

60 - 1.961
1/4 - 13.102 @ 104.87

That was after 4 hot laps in a row

My last run had a mph of 105.49, but my 60 was in the 2's...

Here's a link to my slips for the night...

Had a great time... killed a Z28 with a chip and filter on my last run of the night by 6 or 7 lengths... that was fun...

Looks like I got a new addiction... I figure if I actually let me truck cool down before I run it I can sneak into the 12's... we shall see... I sure hope so...

And hello to the kid from IL I saw down there, I forgot your name... Nice to see a fellow SILVER L...
