Question Factory Bed Cover questions

I was wondering how does the factory bed cover mount?
Does it require any holes or leave any marks if/when it is removed?
I am thinking of buying one from Ford, but don't want something that I will have to drill or something that will leave 'wear' marks, because "someday" I plan on getting a glass cover.

Anyone have any close up pictures of the mounting hardware?

Anyone have one they want to sell me? lxtac@twcny.rr.com

Thanks for any info you guys can offer.

I have a factory bed cover and as far as i know its just clamped onto the bed rails. I like it a lot, keeps everything dry below and its easy to remove.
Mike

*edit* and ohh yea if you look in your owners manual it shows how the factory bed cover goes on.

Clamps sounds just like what I am looking for. I want something to keep my luggage dry on trips so I don't have to wrap everything up in plastic, also I would feel better not "advertising" my luggage when stopping at gas stations and such.
I am going out to the truck now to look in the owner’s manual to get an idea.

Anyone know what they cost from Ford?

Is there another place that sells the OEM unit?

Come on some one has got to have their stock one they want to get rid of

From what I was told here, the factory tounneu cover will cost you about $300 from Ford.

Someone gave me theirs last week and I love it (check out the 'talk about generosity' post if you want details).

The rails clamp on in four places and that's the only contact points. Other than the cover rails laying on the plastic bed rail covers.

Have you tried posting in the 'wanted' section of the classifieds?

Good luck.

Yes Dan I read your post, Made me proud to be from NC

No I haven't posted a wanted thread yet, I have been looking in the 'parts for sale' section of NLOC and a few other sites.

300 isn't as bad as I was expecting from ford, I have to get my oil changed this week. So if nothing pans out online I will just buy one form Ford while I am there.

If you're patient enough you will find one for $150 or less in the classifieds.

They are a piece of cake to install, ask Dan.

Tim, I would hold out normally but, the end of this month I am going back home to NC again and would really like to have it by then.
I hate to stop to get gas at 3am and know anyone that walks by the truck can just glance over and see all my stuff in the bed ya know. Call me paranoid I guess.

Johnie,

I know how it is. Good luck and don't let them sell you the one that snaps on. They have two kinds.

oh they do? I didn't know that!
Does anyone know the correct part number for the one that comes on the Lightning's?
I am sure I will have to order it from the parts counter, I would hate to get the wrong one.

Thanks

When I bought my truck, they had to bring it in from another city and when it got here it didn't have a tonneau cover on it. I had already paid for one so they had to get me one and install it.

The parts guy tried to talk me into getting the one with the snaps but I didn't want that chit on my truck. I don't know for a fact that the snap-on type was a factory cover but I was led to believe it was.

I don't have a part number for it but if you insist on a factory snapless tonneau, you will get what you want (or at least what I think you want).

Yes you’re right about what I want.
I absolutely DO NOT want any ugly snaps!

Anyone else know the part number?

I will put off the oil change till the end of the week and see if I can find one here.

Hi Johnie, my 2002.5 Ford accessories catalog shows the base part number for the flareside to be 83501A42.
I believe a " -AAA " after the part designates the snapless design. Description is " Soft Tonneau Cover - Snapless ".
Good luck!!

Yeah. All it takes is a cold bottle of beer, dinner and a couple of pics.

Speaking of the factory Tonneau cover

I have the factory Tonneau cover on my 01 L.
I also have a bedrug installed. But when it rains water must get in around my tailgate and the back of the bedrug is allways wet. Then if I don't immediately let it air out, it will start to smell funky in there.

Has anyone figured something out to keep the water from seeping in around the tailgate?

Thanks,
Eric
