Need audio help....

I am ignorant so please be patient.

I bought 2 pairs of Pioneer TS-D680R because I found a good price. Now I need to decide if I need an amp or if the stock head is ok for the time being. I would like to get away w/o using an amp but if I need one, how is the MTX Thunder4244 for just these 4 speakers?

Assuming I can use the stock head unit, should I just go get some wiring harnesses and plug 'em in? Is it that simple?

Or if I need an amp, what kind of a install job is that?

I appreciate any input.

Im not sure about the spec's on the speakers, so I can't tell you wether or not youll need an amp. As for the wiring job if you need an amp... your going to have to run wires to the rear's, and to the doors from the amp. Running the wires to the door's was the most annoying part to me. Everything else was easy...

Does this help?

1-1/8" laminated polyester fiber dome tweeter
* Aramid fiber composite woofer
* durable butyl rubber surround
* frequency response 30-32,000 Hz
* recommended power range 2-60 watts RMS
* peak power handling 250 watts
* sensitivity 91 dB
* top-mount depth 2-13/16"

Hmmmm, I don't think the stock head unit will be enough power for those speakers....

91 dB is pretty efficient, I'd sure try them without the amp first and see if it's up to par for you. But, if you won't be satisfied unless you can play Metallica at 110dB all the time, you will need an amp. Crutchfield has adapters that plug right in, and they have instructions on how to disassemble the inside of the truck too!

Hey black2k1,

Tell us what they sound like when you install them. I just bought 2 pairs of them myself. Does yours have a yellow cone?

I will not install mine until about wednesday so I think you might hear them before me. I will be playing them with a 400 A4 Rockford fosgate amp.

Will keep you posted on my results By the way how much did you pay for the pair of speakers?

Yeah those are the ones. I installed the 2 in the doors and they sound pretty good. I paid $110 a pair at onlinecarstereo.com. I bet they will sound real good with an amp.

Just one thing messed me up with the install, how do you know witch wire in the truck is pos or neg?

There is no wire on the old speakers, just a plastic connecter. They work the way I hooked em up but I dont want to damage anything.

SvtLightning02 that's not entirely true, if he had an amp that is very possible though. What would have happened if he had connected them incorrectly, is that he would reverse the polarity which would have decreased clarity and reduce the bass produced by the speakers.

black2k1 , I am happy that you are satisfied with the speakers. I will keep you updated when I istall mine.

Fowl,
I did have one of them hooked up wrong. I switched the wires and the difference is night and day. Here is a link to the list of wire colors: http://www.alienmind.com/speaker_inst/
(very bottom of the page)
Also, the left rear the speaker was obstructed so I put it in upside down. The final result is amazing, 1000X better than stock.

Here is a good link on removing the panels:

Good Luck!
