Question I have a question about MAF sensors

I was riding along yesterday on my way to work. Truck ran fine except my usual disappointing loss of torque and HP i've been dealing with for a long time. Well when I came to a stop light near my job, light turned green, took off kinda hard and my truck just shut off quickly then came back on. I figured, let me make it off the road somewhere before it happened again. As I approached a side street it started skipping really bad and I barely made off the road into an empty texaco service station. First thing I thought of was a thrown spark plug because it happened before but I was able to drive it slowly. Well i had the truck towed to my nearest Ford dealer and the hooked a machine on it to run some test I guess and the guy told me the MAF was shot and I also needed an induction service really bad because I had some carbon build up. The service writer told me they didn't have one in stock and tried to locate the 80mm MAF all over Georgia and couldn't find it..He told me I would have to leave my truck there over the weekend before they would recieve it .You guys know how upset that kinda news could be from a dealer...Well later that evening I went to a Ford dealer up the street and guess what???!!! They had two in stock and by that time, the other dealer's service department was closed..Anyway my question is, Has this ever happened to anyone ? A MAF sensor gone bad? Did it give you the same signs that I described? Skipping and trying to cut off? Do any of you think that as the MAF sensor was maybe getting clogged that could have been the source to the loss of power I was experiencings? I'm hoping it was just the MAF and nothing else...Sorry for the long post...

Thanks!

Sounds more fuel related, like a broken or disconnected fuel line in the tank where the two fuel pumps "Y" together.

When the tech was testing my truck while running, I noticed black smoke coming from the exhaust..Isn't that a sign of a bad MAF sensor? I wouldn't think it would be fuel related...My truck acted as if you were to unplug the MAF sensor..He didn't tell me if that was the actual code that the PCU was throwing when he ran his test..I'll ask him what made him decide it was the MAF tommorrow..Also i'll tell them to check the fuel pressure to make sure it's up to par... Thanks!..

If anyone else has any other comments they are welcom also..

My first thought would be a dirty/clogged fuel filter. Anyway hope your truck is as good as new, less the payment, when you get it back.

You just "cleaned" your air filter.....is this a K&N type? If so, and you reoiled it, you may have ended up coating the sensor with filter/gauze oil???

Hey LIGHTNINROD, you know you are probably right.. Maybe thats what could of happened because I still had some filter oil residue on the end of the filter and yes it is an air raid conical filter. Ford wants to charge me $403 for the MAF and putting it on and thats also including the Induction service...Does this sound about right? Also with this new MAF should I notice a difference in performance compared to having that dirty one on?

Thanks !

Buy a new maf from one of the tuners or a different dealer and put it on yourself.
As far as working on the lightning goes,it does not get any easier than installing a new maf..pretty much anyone can install this with no mechanical skills required.

Just my $.02 worth, but if your going to purchase a MAF sensor, you should upgrade to the 90 mm model. (Are you running a superchip?) I am not sure if this is possible without a chip, but you can check with JDM on that. If you are running a chip it will need a reburn. BUT, if your are going to spend the money anyway, why not upgrade?

I don`t want to sound condesending but did you coat the inside and outside of the filter? Please just lightly coat the outside. Buy the sensor or clean the old one up with denatured alcohol. Don`t touch it with your fingers. Get a prefilter for the conical. Check the sensor with a Digital Volt Meter . Compare with factory voltage and resistence. It may be good. Might save you some money.

Good luck.
