I have seen this up close and personal. The metal tube goes down and pulls air from behind the lower left part of the grill. Obviously, a K&N panel filter is part of the setup.

In the intense Houston heat, this would pull a lot more air than stock and still be pulling ONLY from outside the engine compartment...

I am going to remove my FIPK and try this out...

What do you folks think?

Ken

Looks good to me... I have a tuners product but I was tempted to do something like this before hand...

If it works, it looks clean... let er ride with that...

A few friends this past set out to prove that anything other than the upper factory airbox at our power levels just do not perform as well.

We proved it time and time again on 3 trucks. It even outperformed one of the Big 3's Ram Air system. This is no lie. Try it yourself. Here is the link to where you can read about it:

Here just one of the pix:

(you can find the other on the link above)

One last trick is to run the factory upper airbox w/ NO FILTER down the strip. That was my best time of the night. Remember, when moving, your truck will not breathe in hot air from the motor.

So quit mutilating your stock airbox.

Another thing I dislike about that setup is you can no longer pull from the fender I have two bottoms I think I would like to just cut the bottom out of the bottom clamp together and let it draw from fender hole and hose? any thoughts?

that was my thought... keep the bottom attached and allow it to pull air from both the fender wall and the hose, thereby increasing flow without getting any under hood air. I realize that once you are up to speed, underhood air isn't as big a deal, but in houston, when it is 100+ degrees outside, I can't imagine a better setup especially in stop and go traffic.

part of the problem with the 02HD is the little hole in the fender is quite small -- actually the same size as a standard f150. The L hole is larger, is it not?

So for us 02hd guys, this may be more effective than for the L setup...

Ken, I would really only give thought to air intake temps while "up to speed" and never in "stop and go traffic"... Unless, of course, you are concerned with producing maximum hp while in stop and go traffic. I usually just fiddle with the radio and precisely focus the a/c vents - but that's just me.

Only one problem with your test. It didn't include air from above the box, which did give a .30 inprovement in 1/4 mile times. Any time to can decrease the air temp in the inlet you gain HP. Using a computer and chaecking air temp at the MAF, any improvement made HP on the dyno. The factory stock air box is Very, I say VERY restrictive, and some of the home made fixes are just as bad. Be sure and always check air temp and air flow when modifying your air box, more wine does not mean more air.
Just the facts mam.

The IvanLightning Air Box mod works. Deny it all you want, but it works. Try it, you'll see.

Was you referring to me when you made this statement? Can you explain that a lil better for me if you do not mind, please. Also, where did you get the .30 times from?

Thanks!

Let me say with just the bottom off air flow is awsome there is no restriction with the bottom off the maf will only flow so much there is the restriction also, a filter weather conicall or flat regardless of weather it flows from top side and end, can only flow so much per square inch of filter and the panel has alot of surface area. Also with top on and panel filter all the air comes in in one direction no turbulance nice smoth directed flow.
Just some other thoughts.

Ally69, although I plan to try this prior to spending hundreds on or making my own intake, I was just wondering weather you also have any empirical evidence to back up your claim? I've seen apparent success from others but just wondered if you had any real data to add???

Thanks,

Jim

I don't have any data that holes in the airbox work, but I have some excellent data showing that cone filters loose power . Now, some of the cone filters with cold air intakes may outperform the stock airbox, but the cone filters drawing hot engine air cause a provable loss in HP, at least on the dyno.

I'm going to add a cold air intake to the stock airbox . Cheap and reliable.
