Price of a built Engine?
Price of a built Engine?
thinking about getting a built engine, and i was on the JLP website when i just about had a stroke. manley h rods are 600 bucks? each? ugh! after pistons, other internals, and install, i could have bought like two new engines! or a massive downpayment on the 2k3 cobra. since i know a few of you have indeed had your engines built, how much does that run? im thinking about buying the navi engine (at a price of only 5 rods, 3,000). how are the rods in the navis? i don't know if they are the same, or if they upped the stength for the 4 valve. this shouldn't be this difficult, a guy just wants to run 24 psi of boost and a 125 shot of nitro
well, perhaps not nos, but a healthy 15 pounds of boost would do me well. back to the point, any comments?

The price of a built motor varies on how much you want done.Just rods, rods and pistons, valve springs ,heads....the list goes on and on and on.........................
VINNIE
LOL
The rods are $600 for the set
My short block was $3495
then add things like heads, new timing chains, oil pump, studs, gaskets etc and labor and plan about 5-6 grand
If you use the stock heads 4-5 grand

I think you are misstaken on the price its $600 for 8 rods. The whole package will run you about $1800 and thats rods, pistons, rings, piston pins, head and main studs. You will need some machine work boring the block, ballence the whole rotating assembly and rings gapped. That will run you between $350-500.
Also new gaskets for the heads intake and where the oil cooler bolts up. Some new berrings for the rods and crank will run about $180. There is also some other parts you can get when rebuilding your engine but these are some of the vitals. Also a word of advice if you tear down your own engine set the engine at top dead center and mark the cam chains with a paint pen where they line up on the cams and crank. I also marked the cams on the back of the heads indicating where they were positioned in reference to top dead center. You can save yourself some money if you build it yourself but take your time and double check everything.

really? for the set? i dunno, personally, neither sounded right. i dunno how those rods can be only like 75 bucks each, and 600 seemed pretty extreme. i like the idea of starting with a navi engine (40 hp at the start, with a good 15 psi will hopefully be 100 hp extra over useing the 2 valve). so probabley 2000 for rods, pistons, etc after install. not too shabby then. but for just 15+ psi the rods/pistons/rings/valves/stud kits that should be better than good then? thanks vinnie for the correction.
The Navi engine is identical to are engine other than the heads. And to make work in a lightning is going to cost you some serious dough. For one there is no intake thats available, SHM will modify the stock one for about $2500 and there is some companies that will make one out of sheet aluminum but that will run you $2500-3500. I would wait a year or two befor trying to use a Navi engine because with Ford making the blown 5.4 DOHC engines the intakes bound to show up and for alot cheaper than you can get now.
If you are going to use a 32v DOHC 5.4L motor, you will not be able to use the stock S/C setup, unless you do some major fabrication. Then you could look into doing what High Risk is doing with a custom intake, and running twin turbos (Two T66's) or a larger Centrifugal blower (Vortec T-Trim or ATI Procharger P-1SC).
