The new M3s are quicker/faster than an L, with a good driver, stock for stock.
It would be close in a 1/4 mile race, and after that you'd see the Beemer's tailights as the L's bus-like aerodynamics kick in

New M3's cost about 60 k too. So go buy an L and put 5 k into it and the m3 will be seeing L taillights. Old M3's are quick too. Not as quick as the new though. What about vs. a SS or Cobra?
I have ridden inside a co-worker's '02 M3. Handling without TC a bit tricky but tame. Acceleration is better than the L stock for stock. I believe MM&FF - the person who owned the '02 M3 I rode in had a 13.2 slip for the quarter on stock rubber, springs, and computer. Throttle response with sport mode is excellent.
Regarding the dependency on the driver, the '02 M3 has the option for SMG and can shift faster than most all humans. Also, SMG eliminates the likelyhood for for missing a gear.
DB is right, stock for stock, a good driver in an M3 will be faster than the L. 5K in the L and the stock '02 M3 will lose in a straight line. If the M3 is mod'ed, all bets are off. IMO, you can spend 5K improving the handling characteristics of the L and it would still be hard to match the M3 in the twisties.

Edward - I work at the IBM. Only two L's (mine being one of them) and two M3's that I've seen (one red and one blue). Do you work at the Dell? I drive by the one in RR everyday and have waved hi to many L's.

I did have the A/C on though... it was humid as heck out...
I killed a new m3 the other day....
I was driving home one night after a night on the town about a week ago and see this brand new bmw m3 in front of me. I had a friend in the car who is big import fan and would not stop talking about how fast this car was supposed to be. So I decided to get a little stop light action at the next light, well needless to say I gave him a little rev he responded with a go to hell look and a rev. I asked if he ever raced a Lightning before and he said "no I figure it would be a waste of time." So I decided to show him what a waste of time it is, we took off from the light and he got a little pull, I had no traction but once I hooked I flew by him and pulled about 4 lengths on him. I could hear that car rev to what sounded like 8500 or so but he never started to gain and the most I had him by was probably 5 lengths before the next light. He was amazed, we pulled over and talked for a few minutes and his attitude had completely changed. Its a nice car, little expensive but I think on the freeway or a little longer distance and he would have been even atleast. Hopefully i see him out again or at the Navasota track. Maybe he was a bad driver but I think even a stock L could have run dead even with him.
