You just became ONE OF THEM!!!

I am dissapointed every time I read that one of you has sold thier Lightning and bought an 03 Cobra.
The reason most of us bought our L's was because we love the fact a TRUCK can haul ***. A TRUCK is the key word. All of us could have bought a faster CAR ,but a true Lightning owner is all about loving cool trucks. So maybe its good you guys have moved on to a car.
I know most of you still feel you have a common bond with us because its a Ford and has a blower but it is still a CAR.
I know Cobras are fast and can be made to go faster and thats your reason for your change to a CAR. You guys should blend in nicely with the mustangs every where you look crowd.
Remember, this is a Lightning owners website and most of us could care less about another Mustang.

You just became ONE OF THEM, and are no longer ONE OF US

Unless you kept your L!!

Sorry to vent!! Just to many Mustangs!!

Back in the 'old' days in the 70's, muscle cars where getting slower every year. The rush was on to get the latest, fastest car, especially before the catalitic converters came out in '75. Today is the reverse...... wait a year and the cars and trucks will be faster than they are today.. It is quite a temptation to purchase the latest, greatest Ford, no matter what it is.. But I agree with you firefighter, the Lightning is NOT just another mustang. I have owned 5 mustangs, three of them cobras. I would love to purchase the new '03, but will NOT get rid of my L to do it. I agree that it is special that my truck runs 12's and can haul things in the back.. I will keep my L for a long time and will probably replace it with another Lightning. To be honest, I guess I would agree with Ford that the quickest vehicle should be a mustang and not an F150. But wait a year or two and the Lightning should be faster still.

My friends have asked me to trade my L in for a Cobra, but I ask them why? I love trucks, especially the L, because it's a nice, well-designed, balanced package. I could've easily bought a Viper in place of my Tundra and L, but I wouldn't have nearly as much fun as having two different trucks. For it's size, the L handles great, is quick, and can still haul and pull if necessary (doesn't off-road, but the Tundra fills that need).

With so many big SUVs on the road nowadays, it's nice to be in a tall, high performance vehicle that isn't 'bullied' by everyone around it. I hate the feeling of sitting low to the ground, with everyone looking into your car. The L has 'presence' in traffic. Sure, the L isn't the fastest/quickest thing on the street, but it's a really great, athletic machine that drives well and looks good too (and a chick can sit right next to ya too).

If I really want to go fast, I just pull out a bike and get my 'dose'

When the Gen 2's first came out many new buyers purchased because it was the nastiest (read: FAST) Ford available. I was one of those--sold off a 92 GT w/6 pt cage, etc. after I got my 99. (My wife still has her 5 spd 91 GT, so I'm not totally Mustang-less )

The fact the new brute hotrod was also a truck gave it a second job around the house.

Personally I'm glad there's another hottie in the stable. Improvements to one will hopefully help the other. Maybe the next gen L will get the Manley rods the 03 Cobras are getting!?!

Be happy for another worthy stablemate!

It would be very difficult to get the full measure of performance out of the new Cobra, or the L or any other high performance vehicle for that matter, out here in super-crowded L.A., at least on the street.

I'm very happy to own a fast vehicle that is heavy and rides up high, especially with all the idiots running around with their distracting cellphones in 8000 lb. SUV's , or the fart-can crowd whipping in and out of heavy traffic...

I looked at Cobras before I bought my L, and just didn't fit very well into them - I felt like I was sitting on the floor and the door was jammed up to my side. Plus I really needed the pickup capabilities.

The new Cobras are awesome cars, and I'm glad Ford finally decided to give them some real power, but the L is still my favorite

4 Things i'd like to see before dying.....

In no particular order...

1. A German engineered car with Italian styling and Japanese reliability.

2. Anna Kournikova, soaking wet, on my doorstep asking if I have a dryer she can borrow.

3. Pete Rose inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

4. And a Cobra that isn't simply a Mustang package, but a real American sports car more in line with the Corvette!!

Theres a reason you see Mustangs everywhere. They're GREAT cars! They're fast, affordable, fun to drive,American,V8,and rear wheel drive. They are they original pony car and an American icon.
And before your head swells to big to get out of you L just remember that a lot of the R&D that goes into the Mustang also transferes over to the L.

I wouldnt trade my L for an 03 Cobra because my L suits my needs and I love it, but someday I'll probley have another Stang too.

Let's face it, both are great vehicles. I own a 91 Mustang with a Keith Craft 351 and a Paxton Novi 2000. My L would not stand a chance against that car and why should it? I love my L and will be buying an 03 when they are ready to take orders. The 03 Cobra is a fine vehicle but I personally like the L better as I find it to be a little more comfortable for my large A$$.

True the L had the blower first but what car has the heads that everyone hopes SVT will use on the L? What kinda car was the first SVT and who makes the L? ...and how many parts does the L share with a plain jane F150 work truck? TONS!

What I was saying is, Ford makes both the L and the Mustang and the parts and designs that work on one could work on the other.
The bottom line{for me anyway} is that Im a Ford guy. I like the Mustang and the L and they are both great machines for what they are. I just hate the see the Lightning/Mustang turn in to the same kinda of debate as the Mustang/Fbody/import thing.

I think you have it backwards Andy. The L did the R&D and the Mustang benefits from it, but if you are lucky enough to own a new 03 Cobra, take solstice in the fact that the V-6 shares the exact same side scoops as you do

When I was in High School and the 1993 Lightning was introduced I just about lost it everytime I saw one driving around. Unfortunately, I never had the kind of funds to afford one. When the 1999 was introduced, I still did not have the kind of funds able to get one. But, on 1 September 2001, I drove home in my brand new 2001 Lightning. It's too bad that 10 days later it seemed awfully insignificant that I was driving around in my dream truck. Anyway, I have always owned a truck and don't plan on trading my L in for any car. (Except maybe a GT-40... but there I run into the cost thing again. )

Thumbs up It just tickles the *****

out of me to see these cars/trucks getting faster every year. I remember back in '82 when Ford put the 302 back in the Mustang. That was the end of a long dry spell for performance vehicles, and things have been getting better ever since. We had about 10 years of awful performance, followed by a damn good 15 year run that I hope never ends. Be thankful for what we have right now.
Anybody remember the Chevy Monza Spyder? How about the Mustang II King Cobra? Man I hope those days never return! In short, be it a Mustang, Lightning, or brand X, pick your poison and vote with your wallet. If we don't buy 'em they won't make 'em. I love my '01 L but I also can't wait to see what comes along next to start messing with my bank account.
