Question Good alarms of the L

What's on your L and is autostart a waste of $$$. Thinking of getting an alpine alarm.

I have an alpine alarm, I've had it a while now and no problems yet. (Fingers crossed) I also had a pin installed for my fiberglass cover. It cost me about $350. So not bad.

alarm

Has anybody tried putting on a compustar alarm. Those things with a pager that could page you if something happened?

Had a proto-type of the compustar on my 96 tahoe 2 years ago...one of my co-workers uncle designed it I guess, then sold it.. I bought a non labeled protoype from him before they were in stores...

ANYHOW, It rocked. To clarify, the pager function only worked about 1/4 mile once you get inside buildings... it's suppse to be like a mile in wide open spaces... The remote function to disarm the truck worked from a good 1000' it was neat... made finding the car easy (hit the head light feature) in big lots at night.

Cool novelty, but more times than not, when I ran out to see what was going on, there was nothing there and everything was fine on the truck... sometimes large vehicles driving really close by (like a bus) would set it off... got annoying... I've had cliffords before and after that... I would recommend clifford to all... and definately get the remote start... it rocks... since L's aren't winter vehicles, I can't sell you on the "pre-heating" your vehicle, but it will pre-cool the interior if you leave the AC on...

I have a cheap audiovox remote start/alarm unit that I got for less than a $150. I installed it myself and has worked perfect! My friend has a top of the line clifford that cost him $800 installed. Its a great unit, pretty much does that same thing mine does except for it has remote window roll up/down which is a really cool feature, but if I had to do it over again I would still get the audiovox.

Me?

I got mine at the local kragen(i guess its just like an autozone?) I think its the APS 750 but i could be wrong. If your local kragen(or whatever parts supplier you go to) doesnt have it, do a search on the internet and im sure you will find a web site that sells them.

I put a Viper 550ESP on mine, Had to have Circuit City replace it once. It got where I would have to be right next to the truck to unlock it and then it finally went out. They put a new one in with no questions asked, Well maybe one. That was if I had time to wait while they replace it.

The new one works much better than the old 550ESP, The range on the remotes has been improved. I use the remote start all the time, Cool it off in the summer and Heat it up in the winter time.

I would highly recommend getting one with the remote start option.

Has anyone ever noticed an alarm going off in a parking lot? And has anyone actually run over to the car to see if someone is actually stealing it? Car alarms these days seem like they are always going off, and no-one pays attention to them. My father had an interesting approach to the whole alarm situation on his 99 F350 crew cab lariat. He installed an on/off switch that was connected to the electric fuel pump. When the switch was on, the pump acted normally. But in the off position, the pump had no power, meaning no fuel to the engine, meaning the truck would go about an inch and stop. Doesnt matter if the carjacker had hot wired it, slammed a screwdriver down the column, etc., the truck wouldnt run. He just hid the switch in an inconspicous location. Also cost him about 7 bucks to do it. sorry about the long post, just an idea for ya all to play around with.

I agree to a point, but then what is stopping them from putting the truck up on blocks and taking the wheels/rims, or contents of the cab, or engine.

Yeah, people might not flock over to the alarm sounding... but if you were a thief are you willing to take that chance? Think about it, these are pond scum people-- they DO NOT want to be noticed in any way ever.

My 2-cents worth.

Not winter vehicles?

I beg to differ. It is my daily driver...all winter long (and that is in Michigan)

With stock tires, none the less.

Thumbs up I have the Viper too

Mine has remote start and an extra sensor for the split rear window too.
After I got mine the wife had the dealer installed Suzuki one dismantled and got one just like mine in her XL-7.. we love the remote start.. she used it all winter and then we use it now in the summer to cool down the vehicle.. or you can leave your vehicle running with the alarm on and the doors locked to keep it cool..(did that one today)...
definitely recommend the remote start... also great to do to people walking by your truck..

he he
